No Batteries Required
Books are the hallmark of any society. Plus they require no batteries, internet connection, nor technical prowress to operate. Just a pair of working eyes, knowledge of the particular languange the text is written in, and a clean source of light are all the necessary tools books require.

a wee pict Long Dead
I have a high degree of confidence that the authors listed here have been dead for a considerable amount of time.

William Shakespeare
John Milton
Geoffrey Chaucer
Gawain Poet
Anonymous

a wee pict Recently Dead
I'm fairly certain that the following authors are recently dead, recent in that they've died within the last hundred years or so.

J.R.R. Tolkien
Isaac Asimov
Frank Herbert
Emily Dickinson

a wee pict Still Alive?
I don't recall hearing of these authors dying, but their age and my ignorance doesn't let me say with certainty, "Yes, fool, ------- died last week in a spelunking accident." So I remain the fool, though I believe these authors are still living and producing works.

Arthur C. Clarke
Umberto Eco

a wee pict Alive
Barring any recent accidents or suicides, I'm certain that these authors are still living and producing entertaining and thoughtful works.

Douglas Adams
Connie Willis
William Gibson
Orson Scott Card
Robert Jordan
David Brin

Genre Disclaimer
Yes. Yes. I know. Everyone here is a science fiction writer. That seems to be my natural leanings: speculative fiction and medieval works. I seem to be missing the whole sandwhich between the two slices of bread.

But I'm working on it, Ringo. A recently joined book club that has forced me outside of my genre box. I can now honestly recommend Herman Hesse and Albert Camus. Of course these two qualify as Recently Dead and really don't belong on this page.

For an alive author, check out anything by David Sedaris.
