Bruichladdich
Bruichladdich Distillery was constructed in 1881 and after a succession of owners was closed at the beginning of 1995. Fortunately since then, it has been taken over by new owners and spirit once again flows through its stills. Situated on the west shore of Loch Indaal on Islay, Bruichladdich is Scotlands most westerly distillery. This mouthful of a name means brae by the shore.
It makes an excellent introduction to Islay malts for novices due to the fact that it is a lighter and less peaty malt than the other Islay malts. The long-necked stills, spring water that is not exposed to so much peat enroute to the distillery and the protection of its maturation facilities from the prevailing ocean breezes by the Rhinns of Islay Hills may account for some of the abnormal characteristics of this excellent Islay representative. Bruichladdich is an interesting distillery because of the exceptionally old equipment, including an ancient riveted (as opposed to welded) still that is utilised and the traditional distilling techniques that are still in practice.
