Nick is wearing a topcoat and you can see his breath in the cold air, so it's unlikely that Pilot takes place in summer.	25 Sep 2001

8–12 Oct 2001 5 days	1-04 The Men from the Boys Transcript Daily	* Burton's birthday is implied to be the day after the episode begins (when Nick gives him the gift) but is given as September 13 (in Lawyers, Guns & Money). I'm assuming either that he misspoke (he meant October 9) or that both his colleagues and his son chose to celebrate his birthday over 3 weeks late. (Nick ordered that expensive pen from a catalogue and it arrived late? Burton was too busy with an important closing at F&A to have time for a party?) * The early episodes are clearly meant to cover Monday to Friday in each case, since they're all 5 days long. This creates unavoidable problems by the time we get to Indian Summer and Feeding Frenzy because there are specific dates given in these episodes and so previous episodes have to be squashed up to fit in the available time.	23 Oct 2001

30 Nov, 3–7 Dec 2001 6 days	1-10 Loyalties Transcript Daily	* Christmas and New Year breaks get in the way of this episode and the next three, which must essentially follow in three successive weeks. They have to therefore be placed together either before Christmas or after New Year because we lose a Monday and two Tuesdays due to public holidays. To keep them near the airing dates, I've put them in December. * The final scene in this episode occurs on a weekday (Lulu thinks Nick has taken the day off work, Perry took the day off school) so I've made the episode start on a Friday (Lulu's interview at F&A) and end the next Friday (cleaning the restaurant). Lulu therefore starts at LSP on a Monday. Burton seems to imply in the staff meeting that it is Friday ("We've done well this week...") but these dates place it on Thursday. * Nick says he will start at Kirk & McGee "next week", ie. 10th, although he postpones this because of Hunter's case. * Nick says the broom closet has been his office for 2 months, ie. from end of September to start of December.	11 Dec 2001
10–13 Dec 2001 4 days	1-11 Home Transcript Daily	* On the third day, Nick says he will be Meghan's boss in "5 days", which implies it's Wednesday and he'll start at Kirk & McGee the following Monday (17th). So the episode starts on Monday. * Dr Reed says he's been in hospital for 5 months but he's wrong (blame the stress he's been under) - he means 3 months. * Burton inexplicably changes his shirt, but not his tie, for the last scene (maybe he sweated through it during his court case). * Laurie's summing up is shown out of order – judging by everyone's clothing, it should happen on the same day as Nick's, not the day before.	18 Dec 2001
17–21 Dec 2001 5 days	1-12 Causality Transcript Daily	* Date-stamped Monday to Friday. * This episode needs to start in 2001 for Burton to say that Anne died 19 years ago. However, the dates surrounding Anne's death are so screwed up that I don't necessarily trust this one. * Alvin's 51st birthday is probably between December 15–27 for James to have picked this particular Friday for his party. (Note the distinct lack of Christmas decorations at the Incline.) * Burton says he offered Lulu a job "last month" - according to these dates, Burton would have offered Lulu the job at F&A on or before November 30 (first day of Loyalties).	8 Jan 2002
22, 26–28 Dec 2001 4 days	1-13 Privilege Transcript Daily	* The episode begins with Nick waking up the day after Causality ends, which is Saturday – so it's business as usual, including in the courts (Nick asks James to cover for him). * Christmas (December 24–25) falls on Monday–Tuesday. I've assumed that day 2 of the episode occurs on Wednesday 26th, 4 days after the funeral, rather than the next day. * Wendy is at school, which is unlikely between Christmas and New Year, but maybe she's doing a holiday program of some sort. * Jake says Nick quit “last week” – he actually quit 3 weeks ago. * There is a night-time establishing shot before Nick meets Ray in the bar, but Nick and others are wearing the same clothes afterwards so I have ignored it and assumed this is a lunchtime drink.	22 Jan 2002
14–18 Jan 2002 5 days	1-14 Family Transcript Daily	* The episode ends at the “end of the week” when Liz goes to hospital so I've started it on Monday. * More timewarps in play: on the first day, Liz says Jeremy goes back to boarding school in three days. Two days later, Jeremy says he goes back in two days. (Private schools in the US have an extended Christmas break into January.) * Jeremy mentions figure-skating on TV, perhaps intended as a reference to the Winter Olympics which were held February 8–24, but this is too late to be during his winter break, so I've assumed it is not Olympic figure skating that Liz is watching. * The college football game that caused Jeremy all his problems with the betting ring was most likely before Christmas, since the season ends in December.	5 Feb 2002
4–6 Mar 2002 3 days	1-15 In Loco Parentis Transcript Daily	* I've inserted a jump of 6 weeks before this episode (plenty of time for Nick to look at Lulu that way). Several of the later episodes are self-referenced as occurring close together, so to move them on in order to accommodate the large jump over the summer, I have spread these mid-season episodes out a little. * This episode covers Monday to Wednesday, when Nick picks up Burton from the eye clinic. I've placed it in the week that it aired. * Baby Mary was signed over for adoption on 8 October, which is later said to be 6 months ago. In fact it was only 5 months ago. * There are two references to visiting Melinda's place “yesterday” although everyone is still wearing the same clothes. These references occur off-camera and were presumably dubbed in later to split the day into two in order to explain Melinda's speedy recovery from semi-conscious crack addict to supermom. I've assumed that they meant to say "this morning", because otherwise Burton's Wednesday appointment would be on Thursday. * In the final scene Nick has different clothes, but it might still be Wednesday since he would have gone home to change after spending all night in the same shirt dreaming about Lulu.	26 Feb 2002
11–15 Mar 2002 5 days	1-16 Solidarity Transcript Daily	* The episode starts on a Monday (when Nick bought the flowers). * Jake says the U2 concert is on Thursday, but in fact he goes on Wednesday, which is the night everyone meets at the Incline. (Incidentally, U2 were nowhere near Pittsburgh in March 2002.) * Levi goes to live with James around the end of this episode, and then Lawyers, Guns & Money takes place “less than 1 month” after that.	5 Mar 2002
25–29 Mar 2002 5 days	1-17 The Divide Transcript Daily	* Nick was sentenced at some point before September 17, 2001 and has been attending meetings for "8 months". This would mean he was sentenced around July. * There can't be an episode that covers March 22 because Nick flew out of state on that day (Lawyers, Guns & Money). * When Jake visits his dad on day 2, they're wearing the same clothes as day 1, so this scene was shown out of order. * This is the last we see of Nick's topcoat, and there is melting snow on the ground – spring is in the air.	12 Mar 2002

1–3 May 2002 3 days	1-19 Lawyers, Guns & Money Transcript Daily	* The episode covers Wednesday to Friday (Lulu's engagement party). * Bobby Hinkins was "unable to see Tess" until after March 11, but says he's been out of jail for four months which would place the episode in July. However, it must take place well before July 10, Brian's pending court hearing, because Brian implies that date is a long way off. Perhaps Bobby was in a halfway house for a few months after his release, hence unable to see his daughter. * Nick missed two NA meetings "last week". During the week of Mothers of the Disappeared we know he went to at least two meetings, so this episode can't be the very next week. I've placed it a month later to help spread these episodes out. * Levi has been with James for "less than 1 month" (he went to live with James at the end of Solidarity, mid-March). He must have taken a couple of weeks to sort himself out before moving in with James, in order for this statement to be true.	9 Apr 2002
4, 6–9 May 2002 5 days	1-20 Shelter Transcript Daily	* The episode starts the day after the previous one ends, because Nick is wearing the same blood-stained shirt, so it's business as usual on Saturday, again. Even though Lulu is wearing the same clothes, I've started a new day (Monday) once the F&A scenes start. (Nick still looks ragged but maybe he's had a sleepless weekend.) * When Lulu visits Jeanette's mother, she says Jeanette had a baby that morning - using my dates, it was actually two days ago.	7 May 2002
10, 15 May 2002 2 days	1-21 Chinese Wall Transcript Daily	* Starts on Friday, the day after Shelter ended - Lulu refers to the kiss as having happened "yesterday". In the final scene, Nick tells Burton, "Last week you told me you wanted me to take over this firm." (Shelter) * Lulu tells Nick that he's been kind to her "the entire week" which makes little sense because the episode covers only two days. I've therefore made the second day Wednesday to cover more time.	14 May 2002
3–7 June 2002 5 days	1-22 The Beginning Transcript Daily	* Date-stamped Monday to Thursday. Mandy's OD appears to take place the same day as Hunter's custody hearing, since Nick is in the same clothes - this is date-stamped Thursday. However, Testimony mentions several times that Mandy visited Nick on Friday. I will assume that all events after Hunter's hearing therefore happened the following evening on Friday (Burton's farewell party, Mandy's overdose) and that Nick wore the same tie and suit twice. * Mandy asks Nick "How was your month?" implying that Lawyers, Guns & Money (early May) was about a month ago. However, this episode could also take place the week before I've placed it.	21 May 2002

7, 10–13 Jun 2002 5 days	2-01 Testimony Transcript Daily	* Continuity hell burns brighter than ever as we discover that the incident with Mandy now took place on a Friday, despite being date-stamped as Thursday in The Beginning. * Tom's message to Burton asked for a meeting "tomorrow" (Saturday), but the other events of this day cannot be a Saturday (the hearing, James's interview) so I'm going to assume Burton cancelled that meeting and met Tom on Monday. From there, the other days fall into place leaving Nick's second hearing on Thursday, as mentioned at the start. His hearing for the felony charges was to be the "ninth of next month" (9 July). * Burton's robing is to take place at "the end of the month" (end June). Burton says this will be in "a couple of weeks", which would be correct. * On the third day of this episode (June 11) Darger says he's been looking for Mandy for "over a month". The shooting occurred on May 3.	24 Sep 2002
3–6 Sep 2002 4 days	2-02 Monster Transcript Daily	* There is nothing to date this episode by, except to work backwards from dates given in subsequent episodes. However, there are fall wreaths on the doors at Kim's apartment complex. The rest of summer has been swallowed whole and has ended up in the deep dark place where lost Guardian weekends go... Hold me. I'm scared. * Lulu welcomes Nick back on his first day at LSP. We'll have to assume he took a 2-month vacation after getting out of jail on June 13 (apparently so did James and Jake). * The episode covers four days, the last being Friday (Kim's hearing is said to be on Friday).	1 Oct 2002
9–13 Sep 2002 5 days	2-03 The Dead Transcript Daily	* Kim tells Brian that she and Nick met "last week" so this episode must take place a week after Monster. It covers Monday to Friday. * On the third day, Mary asks Burton to go with her (to Mandy's funeral) 'tomorrow' – wrong, it's two days later, on Friday. * If we take Burton's birthday as 13 Sep (Lawyers, Guns & Money), then according to these dates, Nick and Burton decide to work together again on his birthday. 23–27 Sep 2002 5 days	2-04 The Next Life Transcript Daily	* Drea says her husband died on 23 August, "a little over a year ago". This is the first reference to an actual date in Season 2. * Nick tells Josh that hockey season starts "next month". Since hockey season starts in October, this episode must take place in September. * Laurie got a two-week suspension at the end of Monster, but is now back at work. Her suspension must have been from 9 to 20 September. (Allowing for the above two points is the reason I've placed Monster so early in September.)	15 Oct 2002
7–10 Oct 2002 4 days	2-05 Assuming the Position Transcript Daily	* I've placed this episode midway between the episodes before and after. * Mark Hanson (Nick's lawyer friend) tried to call two weeks ago at Fallin & Straka, but the phones were forwarded "back to your dad's place". For this to be true, F&S must have closed shop more than two weeks before this episode. (I assume it closed soon after Sep 13.)	22 Oct 2002
16–17, 21, 23–26 Oct 2002 7 days	2-06 The Living Transcript Daily	* Lulu has been "short" with Nick for about a month, and she found out about Brian and the hooker "a few weeks" ago. I assume this discovery took place some time between the end of The Dead (she clearly didn't know in the scene at the Incline) and the start of Assuming the Position. Therefore the episode is about a month (or more) after The Dead. * The Velocity deal expires in 48 hours, which implies it was made on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (otherwise it would expire on a weekend, or would expire in "two [working] days"). So I have made the first two days Wednesday and Thursday. The third day I've made a Monday, since the start of a new week seems like a good day for Nick to confront Lulu. This timeline also puts a four-day gap between Lulu having her tests and getting the all-clear. * The doctor tells Penny she's a match for her brother on the very same day she has the test – does not seem possible. * Dale tells Lulu she wasn't there when he was at LSP "in the spring". He must mean two springs ago (and somehow Lulu knows this), because last spring Lulu was there (and Dale hasn't seen Penny since February, so she must have gone missing at least 8 months ago). The problem is that Nick wasn't at LSP two springs ago, either, but was supposed to have handled their case. Nick started in September. We can assume that Dale and Penny's case was ongoing and that Nick picked it up halfway through.	29 Oct 2002
4–5, 7–9 Nov 2002 5 days	2-07 The Innocent Transcript Daily	* I have skipped two weeks since the previous episode, to bring this one closer to the airing date. * Laurie says that Nick set up the children's custody with the Burke's "last spring", which was six months ago (ie. when their mother died) - this would have been in about April or May. * Because one of the hearings is stated as being on Thursday, I have skipped Wednesday (can't skip Tuesday because Albert turns up at LSP on successive days). * For some reason (say, leaving half his wardrobe back in LA) Nick changes his tie before going to the wake. * Lou had been dead all night when he was found. He wanted to go for ice cream with the girls on Saturday, which was not allowed. Andrea said she was going to meet him anyway, so I've assumed that happened on Friday and that Lou was found on Saturday. I just can't quite believe that Jake would give up his Sunday morning to attend the scene, although Nick probably had nothing better to do.	12 Nov 2002
18–21 Nov 2002 4 days	2-08 The Neighborhood Transcript Daily	* I've started this episode on Monday, the day after Jennifer's death, which means Sarah took Michelle for a haircut on a Sunday, and Gene Drover works on Sundays. It appears to cover four consecutive days, and the final day must be Thursday (the day of the hearing). * Nick's birthday: On November 20 last year, Nick told Lesley he was 32. Since he's just turned 33, he must then have only just turned 32, placing his birthday on or just before November 20. By placing this episode in this week, Nick's birthdate is November 19, 1969. He's a Scorpio, and born in the Chinese Year of the Rooster. * The date for Heart could shift a week earlier, which would shift this episode also, so Nick's birthday would be November 12. However, the dates I've used mean that both episodes take place in the weeks they aired. * What was Nick doing on his birthday last year? According to these dates, he first met Lesley on his birthday.	19 Nov 2002
25–29 Nov, 2 Dec 2002 6 days	2-09 The Dark Transcript Daily	* The F&F deal closing is set for Friday so I worked back from there, starting on Monday. * Nick, Jake and Burton are all wearing the wrong clothes in the first scene, but I've kept this the same day as the rest of the day's events because Burton says his eye surgery is "this afternoon". * Nick changes his shirt on Thursday evening after taking Burton home and before returning to help Jake. This is fortunate because he has sleeps at the office and has to wear the same shirt the next day. Jake isn't so lucky. * The sixth day appears to take place the day after the fifth, but this would be Saturday. On this day, James tells a client there's a hearing on Monday afternoon; Alvin is going to file papers; and Lulu tells Nick he has a case at 11. This implies a normal working day, so I've made it Monday. Alvin's had the weekend to sober up and James to recover from the fight.	26 Nov 2002

Also, Lulu says her things went missing "last week". * Mrs Gregg says she hasn't seen Albert for a couple of months so this episode needs to be two months after The Innocent.	7 Jan 2003

3–7 Feb 2003 5 days	2-14 Understand Your Man Transcript Daily	* Brian's interview is on the 4th day, a Thursday, so this episode runs Monday to Friday. * Brian leaves for Columbus on Wednesday afternoon and is back again negotiating at F&F the following day. He must have heard about getting the job by phone that evening (when he interrupts Lulu looking at the slides). * Brian starts the new job "next week", which helps to date The Weight, where he's been gone three weeks. * The Gresslers moved in with Burton in mid-December, so they've been there almost two months - including over Christmas - yet Nick doesn't know about it! However, on the last day Nick and Claire talk about working "tomorrow". I've therefore assumed the deposition got moved to Thursday.	18 March 2003

28 April–2 May 2003 5 days	2-21 Burton & Ernie Transcript Daily	* I've placed this in the week it aired - there are a couple of problems aligning the days with what is mentioned in the episode. * On day 4 when Nick visits Jeremy, he tells him the hearing is "tomorrow". But in the next scenes - before and after the hearing - he's wearing the same clothes. * Halfway through the dinner party, which Lulu said was to be on Saturday, we cut to Burton and Shannon - he's wearing the same clothes he wore the day before at the hearing. I've assumed that the dinner party was changed to Friday to solve this problem. * The scenes showing Jake arrive at his cabin, sleep and then leave the next morning are shown one day too early, if we assume that Jake came straight to the dinner party (Friday night) afterwards. Let's assume he went up on Thursday night, not Wednesday as shown.	29 April 2003
12–15 May 2003 4 days	2-22 Sensitive Jackals Transcript Daily	* Shannon said she was almost 12 in Testimony (early June), and Laurie confirms she is now 12 in What It Means To You (end April), so her birthday must be after early June. However, she is now having her 13th birthday in mid-May - that's two birthdays in less than 12 months! * Taliek was beaten up "six months ago" and in "November" - I have placed The Dark at the very end of November, which implies this episode should be towards the end of May, so I've placed this episode the week after it aired. It could even move one week later. * Placing the episode here also makes more sense of the bear woman's comment: "It's almost time for the bears' Memorial Day poses." Memorial Day will be 26 May. * James says that Lulu is flying to CA on Friday for the interview. We see her leave for the airport fairly late in the day, so I'm assuming she actually flew out on Thursday for the interview the next day.	6 May 2003
15–23 May 2003 7 days	2-23 All The Rage Transcript Daily	* This episode follows on directly from the previous one. Both these episodes could be set a week later and still fall before Memorial Day on 26 May. * The LSP elevator has taken over 30 seconds to reach the ground floor in previous episodes. This episode it takes only 8 seconds. (Alvin has installed an express car?) * Nick has a minor tie problem on day 1, implying an extra day - but I have ignored this in order to fit the episode into seven days so it starts where the last one left off, and ends on Friday (named twice as being the final day). * Ray says that Shannon's birthday and party were on Friday (16 May) which works with this timeline. * Ray gives Shannon a picture taken two days after her third birthday. Rules for constructing the timeline

I tried to make the dates consistent with any spoken and written information in the episodes. Inconsistencies are described in the comments column.
Where there were options, I placed the episode as close as possible to the airing date.
I started the episode on a Monday, unless information suggested otherwise. I took Christmas and New Year into account, but no other holidays.
The show seems to assume that Legal Services and F&A are open on Saturday, so I have gone with this where it was unavoidable (but not Sunday).
Days within the episode are measured by changing clothes in the first instance, along with any other references.
If you think I missed anything, please email me your information, with proof in triplicate. And don't bother telling me I'm mad...
