Knuckles, Sonic, and Tails lay in a pile on a floating rock.  After getting off of Tails, Knuckles and Sonic look over their surroundings while saying that Mammoth Mogul sent them here.  Suddenly the rock begins to move, and Tails yells that it is alive.  Sonic begins to sink as a head appears to attack Knuckles.  Tails grabs Sonic and flies him upwards as Knuckles hits the head.  After Knuckles jumps to safety, Sonic uses a spin to slice part of the rock.  The image of Athair floats above the three, so Sonic performs his figure eight move in reverse.  Using the gravity of the zone, Sonic launches himself upwards and tells Tails and Knuckles to hang on to him.  Athair has disappeared, leaving something like a black hole in his place.

Meanwhile, Mammoth Mogul reflects on how he banished Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.  He plans to retrieve them and use them to help enforce his new world order.  The other freedom fighters and dingoes will survive only until they realize that they are doomed.  At this time, the others hide in a mountain until they can think of a plan.  A dingo says that they need power, but Deo Volente says that they can't be sure it would work.  Mammoth Mogul agrees as he shoots an emerald-colored beam at the mountain.  Hershey yells for everyone to separate.

Mammoth Mogul boasts about his ability to locate beings and then kill them.  A portal opens up next to Mogul and fists begin attacking him.  Sonic and Knuckles appear, both armed with rings around their arms.  Mogul is shocked and attacks them with emerald-colored beams.  Absorbing the power, Sonic and Knuckles are now Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles.  They punch Mammoth Mogul, who crashes through rocks and columns and falls on his back.  Mogul sees Athair and begins to blame him for being the one unknown factor in his plans.  Standing up, Mogul tries to attack Athair.  The beam shoots right through Athair (similar to what happened with Enerjak in Knuckles the Echidna #9).  Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles reappear as they throw punches, breaking Mammoth Mogul's cane and body armor.  Mammoth Mogul reveals that his cane was a trick he used to hide the real Chaos Emerald.  A millennium ago, the Chaos Emerald had crashed into his body, allowing him immortality and power.  Mammoth Mogul uses his power to take over control and movement of the Floating Island.  Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles are thrown to Princess Sally, who wants to know what happened to Tails.  The two say that Tails must be lost just as Mammoth Mogul lands in front of them.  Before Mogul can attack, a cloaked figure wearing rings around his arms attacks Mogul.  Mammoth Mogul attacks the figure, who doesn't move.  The figure says that the voices inside his head had told him the truth.  He really is Captain Super Fox-Man, but he decides to use the name that the voices gave him.

The cloaked figure is actually Turbo Tails.  Turbo Tails explains that the voices he hears are actually the Ancient Walkers, who prophesied of the Chosen One before he was born (mentioned in the Tails mini-series).  Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles team up with Turbo Tails and begin attacking Mammoth Mogul.  Athair watches from above as Mogul tells him not to claim victory since his attackers "will never reach their divine status."  Mammoth Mogul uses his powers to knock Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles aside.  Turbo Tails flies above and reveals that he has the Chaos Syphon (which first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog #35).  Turbo Tails uses the Chaos Syphon on Mammoth Mogul, who can see that the Ancient Walkers are also watching the fight.  With his guard down, the freedom fighters are able to escape.

Locke and his father watch the battle on a monitor and discuss what Athair and the Ancient Walkers are doing.  Locke wonders when he should take action.  On the battlefield, Mammoth Mogul directs his powers at the ground and jumps inside a hole.  Hyper Knuckles realizes that he is going to the Chaos Chamber to get the Chaos Emeralds.  Mammoth Mogul approaches the two emeralds, ready to absorb their energies.  Turbo Tails flies in front of Mogul and activates the Chaos Syphon.  Scenes pass on what look like monitor screens and a voice says the time for action is now.  An explosion soon covers the area.

At dawn, Echidnaopolis shows the damages of the battle.  Sonic says they don't know what caused the explosion, but their powerful forms helped save them.  Knuckles disagrees, thinking that the explosion changed them from their power forms and something else saved them.  As everyone walks out of a building, an EST member brings a package to Knuckles.  Knuckles opens the package and holds up a sword.  Bowing before Princess Sally, Knuckles presents her with the true Sword of Acorns.

Hours later, Sonic approaches Knuckles, and the two discuss their differences, realizing that they have a lot in common.  Sonic explains that they have no place in an organized society, so they should seek out Robotnik's sub-bosses that are still terrorizing the planet.  Knuckles declines the offer, explaining that there are changes to the Floating Island that Athair and the Ancient Walkers could never have dreamed.  The Floating Island is now powered by a large Chaos Emerald with Mammoth Mogul at the heart of the emerald.  Knuckles finishes his explanation by saying his place is at the Floating Island.  Sonic leaves Knuckles and begins walking.  Soon he finds Tails, who begins to talk to Sonic.  Sonic asks if Tails is really the Chosen One and says he should be jealous.  Tails says that he misses his Turbo powers and that he has a lot to think about.  Sonic says that Tails misses the chance to help others and asks Tails if he is ready to go on real adventures.
