Drawing and Shading Ellipses
Assigned: TBA
Date Due: This can take a few day's work to more than 7days. Relax and you will learn much.

General Class Objectives

Goal: The student will be introduced to how to draw and shade the cylinder, cone and sphere using ellipses and will turn in a drawing demonstrating proper use of ellipses and 0% to 100% shading complete with light source and shadow.

Materials:                  pencil                                      crayon
                                    9” X 12”  or 12” X 18” newsprint

Helpful hints that must be read first:

Before starting draw the student will refer to notes taken during all lectures, read and follow these directions carefully.  Save the written work.  Save the notes and any practice sheets.  (Failure to follow directions will lower your grade - just like failing to cooperate in real life will hurt you)  For homework you are practice what is taught that day. 

            An ellipse is a circle seen on its side.  An ellipse has a major axis, the widest part, and a minor axis, the narrowest.  An ellipse is always curving; it NEVER has any straight parts, never.

Draw the ellipse lightly and many times around.  When you darken in the final ellipse you are taking the average of the many times around!  Rarely though do you need to darken it in; the picture is formed with colors and shading usually and not lines.

Steps:

1.         Mentally divide you paper in half horizontally and in quarters vertically.  Now draw in a square, a triangle and a circle and leave the 4^th area blank.  Do this top and bottom.

2.         More will be posted here as time permits but you are reminded to: 

X  Look at the posted examples around the room

X  Be sure to practice nightly

*When one shades their ideas it means to use black and think shadows, not color.

Failure to do what is shown and taught will only slow you down in acquiring the skills needed to remain successful.
