Stamps

Goal:

The student will create a rubber stamp that uses strong areas of black and white, is both original and creative.

Materials:
         Pencil               Ballpoint pen                8 ½” X 11” paper
1” cubed rubber eraser                         Exacto knife

Steps:

1.                  Stamp one face of the eraser onto the ink pad.  Mark on the other end an arrow.  The arrow indicates which way the eraser should be held when using.

2.                  Stamp the eraser on paper to get an accurate size before fitting in the design.

3.                  Create a strong image of your subject within the above area.  Color in the areas to be left behind during cutting.  Those areas will be the high spots and will accept the ink.

4.                  Once the design is finished it will need to be transferred to the eraser to be cut, use ballpoint pen for this step.  Blue ballpoint will show up better that the black will.

5.                  When cutting one needs to press deeply enough, and yet not too deep.  Avoid undercutting another area while working on one spot.  It is better to have to cut several times than to try to cut the design all at once!  Try to imagine seeing the end of the blade.  How deep is it and where is it going?  Remember that you can cut yourself!!

EXERCISE CAUTION WHILE USING ANY KNIFE!!

6.                  When satisfied with the image, print it to see what needs to be cleaned up and possibly re-cut.  SAVE this record of your steps for grading.  It shows anyone that you listened.

7.                  The goal is to get a clean and well-done rubber stamp.  Remember that you are to make up your own designs, don’t copy other existing ideas, logos, and so on.  The teacher will need several prints of the finished design.

Student responsibilities

*This part was sent home to be signed by both student and the parent so that responsibility can be stressed, practiced and learned.

I wish to use the hobby knife that will be supplied to me for an art project in Mr. Myers’ class.  I realize that it is a tool to be properly used and used with caution as it could seriously cut others or me.  I will not play with this tool, or pretend to play with it.  Doing so will cause me to lose the privilege of its usage and seriously affect my grade.  I also realize that any damage caused by my use of this tool will be fully refunded to the school and I could face disciplinary measures for my actions.

I have read the above and fully expect to show my maturity by behaving in a responsible manner.
