Printmaking

Goal:  The student will create an edition of three identical prints and save all other 12 papers printed.  These must be properly documented in pencil as demonstrated. To earn the highest grade the student must hand in: the cleaned styrofoam element on top, the edition of three next, then the other twelve prints, and the 8 preliminary ideas done for homework on the bottom.

Materials:

     pencil                  9” X 12” newsprint           scrap Styrofoam (an egg carton lid or meat tray is ideal!)
      scissors
newspaper .  .  .  or  . . .  old phone book
      brayer                  ink                                     paper to print on

Steps:

1.    Design eight ORIGINAL ideas that are both creative and pleasing to the eye.  Be sure to include bold imagery.  Keep the design simple.

NO LETTERS OR NUMERALS ARE ALLOWED, PERIOD.

2.      Carefully transfer your idea to the styrofoam with a sharp pencil.  Be sure to keep lines far part so that the image is not distorted by the pressure of the pencil on the styrofoam.

3.    Apply the ink evenly and without “tons of pressure”.

4.    Place your element on the phone book carefully to be inked and only then do you lay your printing paper on top.  Be careful not to move the paper while you rub the print.

5.    Set all prints carefully aside to dry.  DO NOT STACK THESE IN YOUR DRAWER, as they tend to stick together.

6.    The class will be shown how to properly document their editions in pencil, please await the demonstration to avoid complications.

Grading Rubric:

                 A  All items in and neatly done, no sloppiness anywhere.
                         *  your cleaned off Styrofoam element
                         *  your pencil signed edition (of three alike)

*  your other printed papers
                         *  your 8 original designs

             B  All items in and neatly done, little sloppiness (if any)
                               . . . probably something is missing

                     C  All items in and done, average to poor neatness, so-so design
                                   . . .  probably a few things are missing

             D  All or some items in, but poorly done, or only some of the items in
                                       . . . most likely several things are missing, you are barely getting it!

                     F  No items in, or one item in but done poorly at that!
                                           . . . sad to say, but you have missed the boat.  You just haven't
                                                 shown that you were paying attention or doing much.  Please,
                                                 make up your missed project.  I'll give you help if you only ask!
