What's going on with the SweetHearts in 2007

DATELINE: July 1, 2007 - And the year has finally come to a close. With tonight's pizza party the 2007 season has come to an end. To Taylor, Blanche, Leah, Jeannette, Tracy, and Megan - Thank you for a great year. To Sammi, Micaela, Savannah, Shelby, Terrah - I'm looking forward to another great year next summer. The party photos are located here. Have a great rest of the summer to all!

DATELINE: July 1, 2007 - PIZZA/YEAREND PARTY - 6pm at Mr. Gatti's - Buffet and games provided by Coach English and Savannah's mom. Bring your uniform shorts with you.

DATELINE: June 28, 2007 - STATE TOURNEY INFO - We play at 9am so we need to be at the fields by 8:15 - remember last weekend when we didn't "wake up" til much later. The tourney will finish by 6-7pm Sat. night so there WILL BE NO Sunday games. Red Shirts, TEAM socks, no real need for tents and things, maybe water but that should be it. This weekend will only be double elimination. Want more play than 2 games, play harder and smarter. By the way, a reporter from the LCAP called me today to talk about US and wants to come take pictures Saturday morning and talk to some of our players for a story that will run Monday.

Practice tonight at 7pm at McMurry (Maplewood).

DATELINE: June 27, 2007 - Good but very SILLY practice last night that's all I can say.

DATELINE: June 26, 2007 - Practices will be held Tuesday and Thursday June 26 & 28 at Maplewood field 35 at 7pm. This weekend's tourney has been moved to the O.D. Johnson Complex.
Map of where Complex is off 210 More later.

DATELINE: June 25, 2007 - The final standings from the Moss Bluff Tourney...

Lady Bandits - 1st (the team that beat us twice)
Eunice Elite - 2nd
Louisiana Express - 3rd (the team with big #99, we played them first)
LA Fear - 4th (the lime green team)
SweetHearts - 5th

The Bandits won it by coming all the way back from the loser's bracket. I guess we have nothing to be ashamed of now.

DATELINE: June 24, 2007 - A weekend of playing tournamnet ball was interesting to say the least. We lost all four games and were close in only one. The girls still had a very good time and the parents were more than willing to set their own lives aside for two days. Thanks to everyone who supplied food, water, generator, fans, tents, and all the other stuff a 'traveling team' needs to hang out at the ball park for a weekend. The girls got a very good taste of what tournament ball is really like. Now on to a couple of practices then the state tournament with more of the same.

The Box Scores/Stats page has been updated, so has the stories page, plus all team record pages or current. Check 'em out and see if you made the record book. Congrats to Savannah - she made plenty!

DATELINE: June 21, 2007 - 11-1. One inning short of that dream season but without that one inning the rest of the season would not have been a great as it was. Thank you to all the parents, players, and coaches that have made this season so much fun. It has been the best season in many, many years. Now it's on to our "second-season" as we get ready to play in Moss Bluff as a Tournament Team - of sorts. It should be interesting and fun. Again thanks to all the parents who have stepped forward to take care of hydrating and feeding the team. I hope this weekend is as much fun for y'all as it will be for me.

DATELINE: June 20, 2007 - The first two game times are listed for Saturday. The other game times will be based on how we do.... I hate the slots but we will make the best of them. We play at 8am and 12:30pm with no time to leave that morning.

I also got this email - Greg, you will not be going home as early Saturday as you think. Remember, this is a 4G-G. Bracket games will start at 3:30. I will have them posted Saturday morning at the tournament (have not started working on them yet). Each team is allowed three coaches to enter the park with the team. The cost for parents is $4.00 and kids is $2.00 per day. One team ice chest is allowed in the dugout area with water, power aide, etc. and will be checked at the gate. See ya'll this weekend.
Now come prepared to sweat and bake...

OPENING DAY GAME TIMES FOR 12U:

Game # Field Time Team #1 Team #2
Game 1 2 8:00 LA Fear (Kelly Vincent) Slammers (Robert Dalton)
Game 2 3 8:00 SweetHearts (Greg English) Louisiana Express (Mike Lewis)
Game 3 2 10:15 Eunice Elite (Amy Myers) Lady Bandits (Kelly Goodwin)
Game 4 2 11:15 LA Fear (Kelly Vincent) Louisiana Express (Mike Lewis)
Game 5 2 12:30 SweetHearts (Greg English) Lady Bandits (Kelly Goodwin)
Game 6 2 1:30 Slammers (Robert Dalton) Eunice Elite (Amy Myers)

DATELINE: June 19, 2007 - No Pizza Party this Friday night. We will reschedule after the tournaments. The change is due to possible make-up game(s) this Friday. As of now we have none but there is still a chance of rain both Wednesday and Thursday. We may try to reschedule for Sunday evening July 1st to officially end our season together. This would be the final day of the state tournament.

DATELINE: June 19, 2007 - Talked to the coaches of the Lady Renegades and was told that they have enough players and will be there on Wednesday night. I also got this email from the director of the tourney this weekend..."I have not started on game times yet. We will start at 8:00a.m. with pool games. Bracket games usually starts around 3:00 -3:30 and finishes about 10:00 Saturday night. Games will start again Sunday morning at 8:00a.m." (For those worried about church Sunday, lets just cross that bridge if we get there)

DATELINE: June 18, 2007 - With a doubleheader tonight it took until 11:40pm to get everything uploaded. Over the last three games we have outscored the other teams 68-10. And it's not because of base-on-balls either. The team is hitting really well right now. Taylor faced only 12 batters tonight in her victory. Leah had a very good night on the mound tonight in the second game as she won her first game and also pitched a complete game.

DATELINE: June 15, 2007 - Rainout makeups scheduled - four games next week including a doubleheader on Monday.

The list of teams playing in our age group at Moss Bluff on the 23rd and 24th.....

Team Name Location
City
Eunice Elite Eunice
LA Fear Westlake
Lady Bandits Leesville
Louisiana Express Lake Charles
Slammers SW LA
SweetHearts Sulphur

At this point it is all that I know. The brackets should be out on Tuesday or Wednesday and I will put together a info sheet with maps for everyone. Enjoy your weekend and Happy Father's Day to Brian and Adrian...and all the other team dads.

DATELINE: June 14, 2007 - Well we got to play tonight and set a team record for most runs scored in an inning at 21! And the first SweetHearts team to score 30+ runs! And we had our pictures taken too.

DATELINE: June 13, 2007 - Rain, rain go away! Tonight we got hit again with a very heavy rain storm. Two nights in a row!!!!

DATELINE: June 11, 2007 - Quick note - schedule change - make-up game this Wednesday.

DATELINE: June 10, 2007 - First I want to congratulate Courtney Cox on making the All Southwest Louisiana Softball team. She was the Sulphur player who came out to help batting practice that Saturday morning before the season started. On another note, I came across a very go website with player videos that show various skills. Check out SKILLS VIDEOS. Also planned for next week are team pictures on Thursday at 6pm. Please be on time.

DATELINE: June 8, 2007 - Now this was the team Coach Brian and I have worked with and trained. Not only was the pitching as good as you can ask for, the infield work was like magic. Watching players responsed like they had been taught was fun to see for both coaches and fans. Leah looked sharp at shorthstop. Jeannette, Megan, Terrah, and Tracy all showed why they should be on the infield. Blanche had a quality game also. The team took back their top spot in the league (if only to by record, sharing it with the Slammers). Even the Slammers coach said he knew who the best team was and is. Thank you to all the girls for making this a night to remember.

DATELINE: June 7, 2007 - Tonight I had to do the hardest thing a coach must do for his team. I had to make a point and we lost the game because of it. It also meant the end to what may have been the perfect, undefeated season. To prove who the 'coach' was and who the 'players' were, I put people in the lineup where THEY thought they should play plus set the batting order the way THEY thought they should bat. In the end we suffered though the worse single inning we have faced in years getting beat 12-0 in the first inning.

Once the players realized that after 25 years I do know a little bit about the making of a "TEAM", they went back on the field and played in MY lineup and won the next three innings 6-1. Maybe tomorrow I can coach. So much for the perfect season.

DATELINE: June 6, 2007 - It's bad when your team knows the game is a "forfeit win" and playes like it. We lost our win tonight by the score of 9-6 to a team that only had 7 players. I hope we play better Thursday night!

DATELINE: June 5, 2007 - Monday night's rain out has been rescheduled for Wednesday - same time, same place. The park also told me that we have a new player, Tracy. After talking to her she will join the team Wednesday night - welcome to the SweetHearts.

DATELINE: June 4, 2007 - Rain, rain, please go away for at least the next couple of weeks. Now we are three rain-outs behind. Taylor had grandparents in to watch her pitch and bam! a nasty little rain wave came throught about 30 minutes before game time to mess it up. The storm dumped lots of rain, lightening, and penny size hail.

DATELINE: June 1, 2007 - What a wild night it was. A double-header, an almost lost game, and a game-winning homerun taken away from a player because of a thrown bat. In other news the SweetHearts are now scheduled to play in a tournament in Moss Buff June 23-24 and also the state 12U tournament June 29 - July 1. The Moss Bluff tourney will be two pool games then two double elimination games. The state tourney will be in Lake Charles and will be strictly double elimination.

The team will practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, June 25, 26, 28 getting ready for state.

DATELINE: May 22, 2007 - The park disbanded a team yesterday (The Krush)and moved the players to ther teams. Autumn darbonne, 11, was added to the SweetHearts. She is friends with Terrah and Micaela and will join the team Wednesday night. The park also redid part of the schedule for the season. See "Schedule" for those changes. Also there is still no word of the make-up game.

DATELINE: May 16, 2007 - The rain didn't stop us from at least getting in a couple of innings last night. The first inning looked very sloppy - both on defense and offense. After shaking off the first game jitters the team settled down and proved how good they really are. However rain again played a part keeping us from really turning on the pressure.

DATELINE: May 14, 2007 - Surprise, surprise, surprise. The team beat me to the park and had the dugout decorated for our 25th season. We managed to get a team photo, warm-ups, and meet the other coach at home plate before lightening crashed and sent both teams to the dugout. Very soon after, both teams headed for the parking lot and within minutes the rains came. A very strong storm with intense lightening passed through the area lasting more than two hours. The start of the 25th season will have to wait. At least we got this photo.

DATELINE: May 10, 2007 - Great last practice and tuneup for the season. Taylor pitched well and the fielding looked very good. Batting was hard to tell since the Stingrays have very little pitching to speak of. Monday should be interesting. Batting practice is scheduled for Saturday as a last get-together.

DATELINE: May 9, 2007 - For those who showed up they are now better base runners and sliders. However, we lost one player and now I'm looking at finding one or more who want to play. I'm not a fan of picking up players at the end of practice season but I also don't want to play 'short-handed' every week.

DATELINE: May 8, 2007 - Very good practice game which too many players missed. Leah looked very good on the mound pitching. M&M caught on quick about base stealing and running. She also got a little bit of pitching to live batters. It was interesting to finally use some of our base running against "new faces".

Tomorrow we will work on sliding.

DATELINE: May 8, 2007 - Very good practice last night. Veterans want to run and bat yet I tell them them "If the rookies don't get ready, the whole team suffers". Weather permitting we will have a limited practice game tonight with the Stingrays. Talked to Michaela's mom. She said MC has been sick but hasn't quit the team like some players have said. I'll have to wait and see. Got news that KPLC-TV will out to do a story on the team next Monday night - our opening game. Sure hope the rain stays away.

June 29- July 1 - State Tournament in Lake Charles.

DATELINE: May 6, 2007 - Practice games have been set. We will visit another team's practice Tuesday night at 5:00 to practice agaist them and on THursday night they will visit us for a practice game. We will practice agaist the Stringrays both nights. Oddly enough the coach of the Stingrays was the "most feared pitcher for the Dixie Darlings" in the SweetHearts first season.

DATELINE: May 5, 2007 - Batting cage practice went well for the few that showed up. Why is it that the ones who always bug you to bat never show up for 'Batting Practice'?. One week of practice left til the season opens. I'm trying to set a couple of practice games.

DATELINE: May 2, 2007 - Birthdays and who's number pages have been updated. The "unofficial schedule" is now posted on line. See every one for batting practice this Saturday.

DATELINE: April 30, 2007 - Great practice. Settleing on a lineup in the field. Taylor (pitcher) and Blanche (catcher) are looking very good together. The infield and outfield is shaping up and the team will head to the batting cages Saturday morning (rookies (9-10am) veterans (10-11am.

DATELINE: April 28, 2007 - Uniform shirts are in and ready to be passed out at next practice. A photo is on the uniform page of this website.

DATELINE: April 23, 2007 - FOURTH PRACTICE. Almost everyone showed up this afternoon however, not everyone showed up in spirit. Several players (12 year olds)gave me much less than 50% effort. They were just going through the motions. I will be just letting them play the outfield or sitting on the bench. Several 11 year olds looked very good today. Sammy looks very good at third and little Megan looks like the natural for second base.

DATELINE: April 17, 2007 - SECOND PRACTICE. Everyone showed except the one player that quit already before giving us a chance. This group is really tight and will make a very good team. Shelby came tonight and boy is she a fast runner. Taylor got a chance to pitch to live batters and looked very good. All-in-all a very good practice. Next practice: Thursday.

DATELINE: April 16, 2007 - FIRST PRACTICE. Seems everyone had a great time and wanted to be here. Two new players failed to show. I'll call them tonight. We got uniform stuff out of the way and did lots of infield drills looking at all the new players. The team looks really good - one of the best in years - but again it was just the first practice.

DATELINE: April 11, 2007 - Draft tonight went great. Jeannette and Blanche were there to see draft take place. Their help in knowing the players helped make the process go smoother. Added to this years team were: Savannah Hickman, Samantha Hill, Micaela Moreno, Terrah O'Quinn, Emily Reeves, and Shelby Thibodeaux. They are added to returning players Blanche McGee, Michaela Coleman, Jeannette Fontenot, Leah Perkins, Megan Smith, and Taylor Wilkins plus coach Brian McGee.

DATELINE: April, 4, 2007 - Tryouts were held today in the Sulphur Parks gym due to wet weather. Blanche and Taylor came by and coach allowed them to make notes on each of the players trying out. Blanche will rank them and next week help draft players. All six players that could return for the SweetHearts did sign up to play. This should be a great season.

DATELINE: March, 19, 2007 - Tryouts will be April 4th 5:30, on Pattison, field 6. Draft will be on the 11th. I am also looking into taking the "SweetHearts as a team to this years 12U state tourney in Lake Charles.
