During term time, we feel that children work very hard at school so we don't have a planned set of activities as we do with the younger children. Once they have had a drink and done their homework, they have a choice of areas: Playroom Join in with the under 5's activities - often a craft activity going on Front room -TV, PS2, board games Upstairs playroom - TV, books, drawing etc, activities unsuitable for under 5's Garden - weather permitting Study - PC
If we have disagreements, such as two children wanting to use the PC at the same time or wanting to watch different programmes, we will work with them to come to a compromise. Often children's programmes are repeated later and time limits can be imposed on game playing. If necessary, rotas will be drawn up with the children so that everybody gets a fair turn at everything.
Holiday time tends to be more structured as it is all too easy for children to choose to spend all day in front of the TV! We plan outings, set up sports days, craft days, set challenges etc.
At this age, children are often tired after a day at school so we offer them a choice of activities. Although they can choose, we try to encourage the children to participate in a variety of activities rather than always watching TV or playing the same game.
