After blowing his brains out, Zack's body was harvested.
Director Renfro took Max to see him, telling her she was being given a chance to
say goodbye before they moved Zack to another facility.
After Manticore was burned to the ground by Renfro, Logan told Max that Zack was alive. Several steel heads had robbed an electronics store and Zack was with them, only he was now part "cyborg." Max tracked him down but when she came face to face with Zack, he didn't remember her, at first. Once she told him her name and showed him her barcode some of his memories of her returned.
Max took him to see Logan's doctor, Sam Carr. He told Max that Manticore had given Zack artificial organs to replace the ones he lost and they had also put nanocites in his blood to rebuild tissue over his metallic parts. Zack told her the steel heads hooked him up to a machine every day to "clean" his blood. They had been sifting out the nanocites so Zack's "cyborg" features would remain visible. Sam also explained that the part of Zack's brain that allows him to recall memories had been damaged. His memories were still there, but he'd need clues (like seeing her barcode and hearing her name) in order to put all the pieces of a memory together. When they returned, there'd be a chance he wouldn't be able to distinguish between an actual event and something he dreamed about.
Max took Zack back to her apartment. During the night Zack woke up crying and went to Max's room. He told her he remembered everything and he was sorry for letting her down and letting them (Manticore) take her. The next morning Max was surprised to see that the nanocites had been working. Zack's face was almost completely restored. The steel heads were upset that their little soldier had been taken from them. They went after Max, thinking Zack would come looking for her and then he'd rejoin the group. There was just one little problem. In the past Zack had been in love with Max, but knew she loved Logan. Now, Zack honestly believed he and Max were an item. Zack went looking for Max. When he found her Max was handcuffed to a bar in a closet. Zack told her he'd never let anyone hurt her ever again and then tried to kiss her. Max pushed him off and Zack gave her a puzzled look. He asked her what was wrong, saying it'd be like before and tried to kiss her again.

He went nuts asking why she didn't love him instead and said he was going to kill Logan. Max freed herself and called Logan, warning him Zack was on his way. She arrived just as Zack was closing in on Logan. She tried to stop him and he knocked her away from him. Max landed near a loose wire. Seeing that a nearby puddle of water was under Zack, she electrocuted him, with tears in her eyes.
He was taken back to Sam. He told them Zack's memory chip had been erased. He wouldn't remember anything that had happened to him since it was turned on. In time his memories could return again, like they had. Max didn't want to risk loosing Logan again if Zack's memories returned.
When Zack woke up a man was sitting next to his bed. He asked what had happened to him. The man called Zack Adam and told him he was a driver for a ranch. He was making a delivery to Seattle when the truck flipped off the side of the road. Zack said he didn't remember any of that. The man told him the doctor said memory loss was normal. Zack got dressed and the man wheeled him out to a truck to take him back to the ranch. As Zack was being wheeled out he passed Max, sitting in a chair reading a magazine. Zack asked her if they'd ever met. Max said, "No I don't think so." That was the last time Max would see her big brother.
