No “snap solution” to systemic corruption – PM

The militant Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) is cool on the opposition’s idea calling on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to step down to pave way for a “snap election”.

According to PM Rep. Renato Magtubo, though the Opposition’s call is well backed up by legitimate issues, a “snap election” is neither a guarantee nor an ultimate solution to the systemic problem of corruption.

“There is no ‘snap solution’ to systemic corruption. The GMA government is truly corrupt but Gloria’s ouster would not be enough to answer the people’s clamor for genuine change,” Magtubo said.

Magtubo stressed further that, “what the country needs now is an overhaul of the rotten system not a simple switching of chairs in Malacanang. The imperative is not to merely sweep the dirt under the rug but for a total cleansing of government”.

The labor leader noted that high-level corruption was the same issue raised during Edsa Dos, which resulted into the ouster of former president Estrada. He added that the Filipino people must learn the “lessons of this not-so-recent history”.

“Let us not allow history to condemn us to repeat its bitter lessons,” Magtubo said.

Magtubo lamented, “If in the snap election Lacson or anyone in the Opposition beat GMA, what would happen is merely a rigodon of trapo leaders, a merry-go-round of the same thieves.”

“To prevent a mere repetition of a failed upheaval, the workers and the toiling masses must build an independent movement that would not only call for the ouster of GMA but will also work on alternatives for genuine social and systemic change.”
