Tuxedo MaskDarien/Tuxedo Mask is probably the most mysterious and puzzling character in Sailor Moon. When Darien was a small child, he was in a terrible car crash which killed his parents and left him with no prior memories. As a result, Darien struggles to figure out who he is through much of the first season. As Tuxedo Mask, he always seems to come to the aid of the Sailor Scouts when they need it the most, and while they consider him a valuable ally, he insists that the only reason he helps them is to prevent the Negaverse from obtaining the Imperium Silver Crystal.

Tuxedo MaskTowards the end of the first season, the Negaverse gets hold of Tuxedo Mask and brainwashes him. Queen Beryl sends Tuxedo Mask and Malachite to obtain the Imperium Silver Crystal. Malachite grows jealous of Tuxedo Mask's position and fears that he will replace him someday. This leads to frequent quarreling between the two of them. As "Evil Darien", his roses change color from red to black. Though he is brainwashed, it seems as though the Negaverse never has complete control of his mind. In fact, Tuxedo Mask even saves Sailor Moon in a few instances, but again insists that he is protecting the crystal. In the final episode of the first season, "Day of Destiny", Sailor Moon is taken to the Negaverse to confront Queen Beryl. This time, Darien is completely under her control. He lashes out at Sailor Moon, cutting her down with his sword (but of course there's no blood at all). Sailor Moon tries to restore his memory with Moon Healing Activation, but to no avail, and he continues to attack her. Finally, Sailor Moon reveals the Star Locket which represents the love between her and Darien, and when he touches it, his memory is restored. Sailor Moon had set him free. Enraged, Beryl hurls a giant crystal at them, though not before saying the classic quotation, "That's so sweet, I'm getting cavities!" Darien throws a rose at Beryl, shattering the crystal in mid-air. The rose becomes embedded in her chest, killing her (We all know she comes back to confront Sailor Moon. And if you wanna be technical, it's actually Metallia that fights Sailor Moon, not Beryl, because in the Japanese version Metallia absorbs Beryl's energy. But this is another story).

Tuxedo maskTuxedo Mask is quite an interesting character. It is rather amusing how he always seems to pop up to bail the Scouts out of some mess. What's even more amusing is the fact that he'll appear in the oddest places, such as in a tree or standing on top of a lamp post. Darien loves to give Serena a hard time; he's the one that gives Serena the affectionate nickname "Meatballhead". Serena is always annoyed by this, and needless to say, her reactions are hilarious. Sailor Buben and I also like the ways he uses his black rod (don't get any sick ideas). When attacked, he'll casually twirl it in a circle, deflecting any projectiles thrown at him. The rod can also extend to strike enemies from a distance.
