Shukokai is related to the Shitoryu "family" of karate, which is one of the four major karate styles world-wide. The others being: Gojuryu, Shotokan and Wadoryu. Shitoryu was started by Kenwa Mabuni, he trained with all the great early masters from all the islands, took the good from them all, included some of the Chinese white crane and formed Shitoryu.

Our style was developed by Sensei Chijoro Tani (born 1915 in Kobe, Japan) Sensei Tani evolved the Shukokai techniques over a period of years and in 1949 founded the Shukokai World Karate Union. Retaining the traditional aspects of etiquette, discipline and mental control, he also wanted to encourage and co-ordinate research into improving training methods and technique advancement.

When Sensei Tani passed away, a lot of his students formed their own groups in different countries. Most of the students in Japan, stayed with Shukokai World Karate Union, and formed the shihankai that rules the organization. Sensei Takeshi Masuyama is the president of this organization.

The South African branch has 9 National Technical commission members ( of which Dave Millar is one) and is the official Shukokai organization for South Africa.

By joining our karate academy you are certain to be taught by the best there is in Natal and possibly in South Africa. Dave Millar is a master in his field and trained many students holding Natal and S.A. Colours. He has also trained instructors, now teaching in their own schools.

With us you will have all the opportunity you want to succeed and rise to the top.
See the qualification and history pages, read the question and answers and e-mail us, if there is anything else you want to know.
