Belgian Mole (part 2)
Episode 9
Everybody comes together and they watch episode 8 live. They finally get to know who was the Mole in their group...
Hugo was the Mole. Marianne had won. But there are still lots of questions. How did the Mole work? Where did he sabotage? When did Marianne start to suspect Hugo? Who did the others vote for? How was the Mole briefed? And how were the contestants selected?
How were the
contestants selected?
They placed an advertisement in the papers and got about 5.000
responses. They interviewed 150 of them and 9 got selected.
We see the contestants' screen tests, followed by something they
did or said in the episodes:
Bart
"I'm not very sporty, but that doesn't mean I don't have a
stamina. I... how do I say it?"
FLASHBACK episode
1 Bart (while climbing the mountain):"This
is pure nonsense... pure nonsense."
Marie-Rose
"I'm emotional, yes, I'm very sensitive."

1 Marie-Rose (crying because she gave up):"This
is so humiliating!"

"Women are on a pedestal with me. But there are some things
you can do with women and other things you can't."

3 Luc (after phoning home with his wife):"Those

"Yes, I can play very well, or act. I can trick people
easily, be serious and not serious to them."

4 The challenge where they have to negotiate
for the money and the exemptions. Dominiek doesn't say whether he will go for
the 200.000 BEF or not. Carine:"Dominiek, can you please tell us
what you're gonna do tonight! You give an extra turn to our decision, you're
making it all much more difficult."
Eef
"Me? What I do? I do so much! My hobbies? I do deep sea
diving, but as a trainee, so..."

5 On the boat, when she's seasick. Eef:"I'll
never get on a boat again. Not even for 5 million BEF!"
David
"Why would you choose me? Because I'm sure I can make an
atmosphere in the group and I can play people off against each other. You have
to be sneaky in this game."

2 Niki:"I have a son who's 24 years
old..." David:"And what's his name?" Niki:"David."
David:"Oh what a coincidence!" Niki:"Yes, but if he
would do the things you're doing now, I would knock his head against the
wall!"

"I think I will express my opinion. If I don't agree with
something of course!"

Carine:"I want that dog out of there, or I won't stand here!"
Marianne
"I'm not someone who tells jokes easily. If I tell a joke, I
always tell them wrong."

Niki
"I have some knobs on my vocal cords, but that's because I
let my vocal cords tremble in a wrong rhythm ever since I was a kid."

"My first intervention was improvised when I heard in the van
that Dominiek was talking about a tandem sky dive."

1 Dominiek:"The first challenge will be
a tandem sky dive!" Hugo:"A what?!" Dominiek:"A
tandem skydive..."
"I immediately reacted to that and later on I stressed it
again."

1 Hugo:"Who talked about a tandem sky
dive this morning?" Dominiek:"I did. But it was just a wild
guess." Hugo:"Some guess if you ask me."
"And I think the message was understood, because it was used
in the challenge after it."

1 Carine:"I don't trust Dominiek!"
"He almost litteraly offered
himself as a Mole and made use of that."

3 Michiel:"The carriage starts
driving... now!"
Hugo:"With the challenge in the
library I thought I wouldn't stay long, because then I would have to act I
didn't know the answers to the questions."
Marianne:"To me, it was very implausible that a man like Hugo, with
such a cultural background, left that soon."

3 Eef:"Yes I've got one!" Hugo:"OK,
then I'll go!"
Hugo:"I had seen that the longest distance was about 7 to 8
minutes and I wanted to go to the stop very slowly and just miss the
carriage."

Hugo is slowly walking on the road. Hugo:"If you're filming for real
again, let me know, so I can start running from time to time."
Hugo:"But because of a dumb coincidence the carriage came
driving out of a side street. Unexpected. Luc saw me."

3 Hugo sees the carriage coming out of the side
street. Luc waves at him, he waves back. As soon as the carriage is around the
corner, Hugo says to the camera:"It's all screwed now!"
Hugo:"I had to get on the carriage, so my act of sabotage
actually failed there. But maybe I still lost time by not mentioning books I
knew to the others."

4 Eef, David and Hugo enter the room where they
have to solve puzzles.
Niki:"He solved the first one very quickly.
But earlier that day he had told us that he likes solving riddles and
puzzles."

4 They try to solve the second puzzle. Which
leeter must be at the place of the question mark. Belgian version: etdvvzza?

Hugo:"With that puzzle I dawdled a little and then suddenly
Dominiek already came running in. He really surpassed himself there to run
through those alleys and doors to get to us. Thanks to Dominiek the challenge
ended well. For the group at meast..."

5 They are playing blackjack
Marianne:"With the blackjack... big miracle! Hugo had 21
(=blackjack) with just two cards in the first round. I thought that was
impossible... Hugo couldn't have that much luck, only the Mole could."
Hugo:"Everyone thought the cards were put in a special order so I
would end up with those cards forming 21. That was not the case. Before we
started I went to the bathroom, where I would find two cards hidden behind the
toilet. Now I had to wait for the right timing to change those cards with the
ones I had received in the first round. So I had to be a bit sly. But I
succeeded."

6 The Hacienda challenge. We see a blurred
image of the Mole, telling the positions to the attackers.
Hugo:"With the Hacienda challenge, the attackers not only had a
map of the Hacienda, but I could also brief them in the bathroom with a hidden
camera and a mic."

The screen isn't blurred anymore and we see Hugo:"I repeat, the front is
the side of the entrance gate. Somebody is using the light on the backside on
the tower. There 5 persons."
Hugo:"It wasn't very evident to let that challenge fail,
because I was in the military. My friends reproached me about it, when they
didn't know I was the Mole yet."

7 The Hotel challenge: Carine and Niki are
talking to each other on the phone and Hugo can't reach them.
Hugo:"I didn't mind that there wasn't much consultation between
the contestants. A lot of people were doing individual actions."
Hugo:"My assignment was to let the challenge succeed, but to make it
exciting. But it almost got a little bit too exciting, so that the challenge
almost failed. And Niki did some things there, like not warning us she was out
of her rooom and stuff. And I could easily use that by saying, in an indignant
way,..."

7 Hugo:"Why didn't you tell me
anything?! I didn't know she was out of her room yet!"
Hugo:"If a challenge fails, I can't say I'm happy. I have
team spirit and that's why I always was very happy when I challenge
succeeded."

8 Hugo is trying to cut the tree.
Hugo:"I was told to let the tree fall on the smallest amount. But
there was a lot of wind and that tree just kept standing straight, because the
wind came from a different direction. Then suddenly, I don't know why, the tree
did fall, but it was a in totally different direction as I wanted it to fall. As
a Mole that was great, but for me it was a defeat."

8 Hugo sits on the ground very disappointed.

We see the contestants who are filmed by hidden camera's in the
cars and they are combing their hair, polishing their nails, rubbing in their
faces and looking in the mirrors to see what they look like.

4 Dominiek:"Yesterday I was doubting a
little and today I think I'm on the right track again... with Marianne."

As the Mole, Hugo had one big advantage: the presence of
Marianne. The contestants that were eliminated had each voted for Marianne.
Every single one of them voted for her. They were so very focused on Marianne
that they hardly saw Hugo's sabotages.
Marianne:"If I would have been the Mole, I would have stayed myself and
apparently being myself is enough to be suspicious."

1 Marianne's backpack falls in the abyss.
Dominiek:"I found that very weird. I had fastened that backpack
really well and 10 seconds later, she loses it."
Niki:"I really thought she had sabotaged there. Especially because
she immediately said she was gonna get it."
Marianne:"And then everyone must have thought 'What? She's trying to
win time!' and I didn't think about that. So apparently it wasn't only
suspicious that my bag fell in the abyss, b ut the fact that I said I was gonna
get it too."

1 Bart:"There are small things, I can't
remember one right now, that point me to Marianne."

Eef:"She has a very high Mole-factor, but in fact I haven't been very smart, because there were those notes in the morning of the Mole and me and Marianne were the biggest sleepers. Those notes already hung there very early in the morning and couldn't have been Marianne! Impossible!"

Dominiek:"She really did tell me some times 'Dominiek,
I'm not the Mole!'"
Marianne:"I really tried to convince him, because I felt he had to
go home and that it would be my fault."
Dominiek:"But that's very ambiguous of course."
Marianne:"I found it very funny when he told me:'You can deny it,
MArianne. I know you're the Mole, but I have to tell you that you're not playing
it very well.'"
Dominiek:"I made a bad tactical decision..."

Marianne's Mole-factor came to a peak in the library challenge.
As well for the contestants as for the viewers. She really made herself
suspicious when she was searching for the author of 'The Godfather' in a book
and she covered his name with her thumb.
Marianne:"I'm sorry, guys, that it was in it, but I really didn't see
it, really not."

3 Luc:"She should have known Mario

Marianne:"The worst moment for me was when Carine was eliminated. She came to me that night and said 'Marianne, I think it's you...' And I knew that she would for me and that she would be eliminated if she would vote for me, because I knew I wasn't the Mole and Niki had an exemption."

FLASHBACK episode 8 Michiel:"And all the time you voted vor the wrong contestant?" Niki:"Yes." Marianne:"You still did?! You voted for me?!"

Hugo:"Before we started the interviews, the cameramen
were always sent out of the room to do an introductary talk. But with me, that
was to discus the next challenge. For exemple with the challenge in episode
3..."

3 Michiel shows Hugo the envelopes and tells
him to make sure he's on the right side of the group, so he could choose first.
Then he would only have to take the left envelope.
Marianne:"I found it very weird that Hugo could choose first and
that he had the one with the cross in it. I noticed it and that has constantly
been in my head."

3 Michiel:"And in that challenge
there's one person who doesn't have to do anything. The envelopes will decide
who that is." He walks over to Hugo to let him chose first and we see
Marianne whispering something to Eef. A little bit later in the church, Michiel:"Hugo,
you can earn an exemption today."
Hugo:"The sniper challenge is a perfect sabotage, but there
are several aspects in it. Firstly there's the fact that there's no money won...
an exemption. And it's an obvious way of sabotaging and there are certain risks
attached to it."

3 Marianne gets shot
Hugo:"I had my doubts with that challenge, because I thought I
would become very suspicious."

3 Luc enters the church and yells to the
others:"Here! I found him!"
Hugo:"I had prepared myself very well, because I didn't know
how many contestants would reach the church. For every number I had a plan to
try to reach the finish with as less people as possible. Because if I had to
shoot 4 people, that wouldn't be easy. At that moment people trusted me a lot
and I had to betray them."

3 Eef runs and enters the cinema (the finish)
Hugo turns and shoots her.
Eef:"It was dirty of him to shoot us in the cinema and not for
exemple on the streets. Me and Luc, we were very happy we had made it and then
suddenly Hugo turns and starts acting strange."
Hugo:"I will never forget Eef's face. She was shining because we
made and then I shot her..."
Hugo:"I was really touched by the reactions on the betrayal."

3 Luc to Eef after being betrayed:"Stupid
moron! He can sleep alone tonight!"
Hugo:"I didn't expect it. Some hard words were said. And I
was so touched, I showed real emotions."

3 Eef puts her arm on Hugo's shoulder, the rest
is angry. Hugo walks away and says:"I wish you would talk about
it..."
Niki:"His emotions caused emotions to me too, and that has
deceived me. Afterwards I've never suspected him anymore."

3 Carine (angry):"And he can stay in
the game?! Well he can stay if he wants! Really!"
Carine:"His reaction was so real. It was always so
acceptable... human. And a colonel that shoots his own men, I just couldn't
understand that."
Marianne:"To me it wasn't one of the reasons to suspect him. We knew
that there would be exemptions in the game and... I would have shot too."
Luc:"When Hugo shot me... whether he's Mole or not... that man
couldn't sleep of it afterwards too."
Hugo:"No one ever linked it to me being the Mole. It was my
assignment and to me an assignment is always holy. Even though I didn't like
it."

3 Eef runs to Hugo to console him.
Hugo:"I will always be grateful to Eef for
that."
Fake Moles
Dominiek and David had an obvious strategy: make themselves
suspicious to try to deceive the others. That caused several conflicts.
Dominiek:"It wasn't difficult playing a fake Mole,
because I like to lie from time to time and I could do that in this game."

3 We see Dominiek looking at the table with the
fake production map. When he's with the others he says:"There's was
nothing on that table." Marianne:"You're a bastard!"
and she throws a cushion.
Luc:"He had a stupid strategy... with his Pekinese! Let him fool
others with that, but not me!"

3 Michiel:"So which dog do you
choose?" Dominiek:"The middle one!"
Carine:"That was so obvious!"
Luc:"I already saw through him within 2 seconds!"

4 Michiel:"Here's the cheque of
200.000 BEF")
David:"I don't know to who I said it, butI said 'I bet he is
the Mole, because he's pretending to go for the 200.000 BEF and just at the
last moment he'll say he doesn't want it.'"
Marianne:"He could do iy, you offered it to him, but to me he was
just looking for some attention. When he decided to refuse the cheque, I found
it awful."

4 Dominiek:"I think I changed my
mind." Then we see cut material: Dominiek is dancing with Eef. Marianne
passes them and says:"The one-man show is over!" Dominiek looks
at her angry.
Eef:"I did doubt about him. It was so obvious that I thought or
he's the Mole or he's gone completely mad!"

4 Dominiek gets the red screen and is
eliminated...........
Dominiek:"Some thought it was obvious, some thoguht it wasn't. It
was twice ambiguous."
David:"I wanted to put myself out of the group and say
some things to get spontaneous reactions from the others."

2 Niki:"We'll just ignore him and it's
over!" Luc:"You're a pain in the neck." David:"I
might be a pain in the neck, at least I'm not the Mole."
Luc:"David really went for the game. He was annoying. He
couldn't let go of the game."
Davdi:"They just wanted to have fun and maybe in a later stage look
for the Mole, but I didn't want to have fun, I wanted to find the Mole."
Dominiek:"He was a bad guy. He said so himself. He said he was the
JR of 'The Mole'. But he changed when I got eliminated."

3 Eef en Dominiek throw David's clothes in the
sea.
Dominiek:"I am an educator, so I educated him there and from that
moment on it went better with the group."
David:"Under the pressure of the group, I decided to have some fun
too, but then I couldn't play my game anymore, so I played it different."

6 David gets the red screen and is eliminated
Dominiek:"I always thoguth David really was like that, but now
that I know him outside of 'The Mole', David is a cool guy."
Even more sabotages
Sometimes Hugo was very sly to try to make others suspicious. He
sometimes even managed to let the dirty tasks to the others.
Hugo:"It's maybe less spectacular, less obvious, but if you succeed it's
very effective."

2 We sse a toreador in a bull-ring
Hugo:"With the bull fighting I thought that if we let the women
go first, that there would be a lot of failures."

2 Hugo:"Sorry, but I don't even see
myself doing a tienta, let alone the women."
Hugo:"So that the men would have to let it succeed and then I
could still fail or not participate much and let the challenge fail. But then it
turns out our women weren't afraid at all and were very strong. I miscalculated
it there."

2 We see MArie-Rose fighting the bull. She's
not at all afraid.
Hugo:"If I don't want to be suspected, I have to make sure the
others get suspicious, to deceive the group and the viewer."

2 The challenge with the hot-air balloon. Hugo:"Dominiek
mustn't play this game on his own! Damnit' Dominiek keeps driving straight
ahead! We have to go left! Left, damnit! If he won't turn left here, I'll shoot
him!"
Hugo:"You could call it psychological war, using the other
people's characters."

4 Niki:"We play this game against each
other. We have a case with 100.000 BEF and an exemption in it."
Hugo:"You could sense that the group didn't like the idea of
exemptions."

4 Hugo to Dominiek:"You're not going to
decide about something we have to live with afterwards? Because you might be
gone tonight!"
Hugo:"I knew Dominiek would choose for the exemption, so I
excluded him in the voting to make sure the exemption and the money would not be
chosen for."

4 Hugo:"You have a right to vote if you
stay in the group!"
Marianne:"He did everything to make the others suspicious.
And he tried to convince me he wasn't the Mole.'
Hugo:"In the challenge with the three different routes to the hotel,
I knew Marianne was suspecting me. We talked about it and she had accused
me."

5 In the van (the resourceful team) Marianne:"This
is gonna work out, right Hugo?" Hugo:"It depends what you mean
with 'work out'. I'm always with you, because you can be the Mole too!"
Hugo:"I knew it would be my last chance to convince her I was
not the Mole, by not acting suspicious."

5 Hugo on the bike and Marianne on the
motorbike. Hugo:"So which one of us is the Mole? The one who's working
the hardest? I don't think so!"
Hugo:"I did my best to let that challenge succeed. I had to
drag Marianne to the hotel to arrive on time."
Marianne:"Hugo went a little bit to far trying to put suspicion on
me."

5 3 minutes left Hugo and Marianne are running.
Marianne stops to get some breath. Hugo:"Come on, Marianne! Hurry!"
Marianne:"Yeah yeah, wait a second."
Marianne:"I felt really sick, because I was so tired."
Hugo:"And luckily for me, Marianne became very suspicious with
that."

6 the skid-control challenge
Hugo:"They had chosen to let Marianne go first, so there was
nothing much I could change about that. So I chose to be between Mike (the
instructor) and Carine. If Mike had explained everything to me, I could explain
it to Carine in my way. And I succeeded. I didn't explain it to Carine
correctly."

Michiel to Hugo:"Later, we'll go to the museum. David and Niki have made
a torso with chains around it and shoes in front of it. Try to let the group
choose something else." In the museum Hugo tries to convince Marianne and
Carine to change their minds and to choose for the building. Carine, however,
wants to go for the torso.
Hugo:"Carine was very stubborn and so I tried to convince
Marianne and I succeeded."
Marianne:"I walked in his trap, but I think Hugo saw it as a test
for me to see if I suspected him. But at that moment I have been very stupid. He
really played his role fantastically there!"
Hidden Hints
Besides Hugo's behaviour and his sabotages, you could also get to
know it by hidden hints throughout the episodes:
* The very first image of the very first episode was immediately an image of the Mole.
* In the opening theme there was a hint to. For exemple, the order of the contestants in episode 5 was:
Carine - David - Hugo - Eef - Marianne - Niki
So everyone was placed in alphabetical order, except for Hugo and Eef, but if we change 'Hugo' with 'De Mol' (Dutch for The Mole) it's alphabetically ranged again:
Carine - David - De Mol - Eef - Marianne - Niki
* Hugo had given an extra hint himself too. Eef:"With
every execution, he was wearing slippers. We were all packed and had our shoes
on and just sat their with his slippers and that didn't really make sense."
Niki:"Everyone was ready to leave and he was sitting there with
those... but still... not enough to convince me he was the Mole."
* Sometimes the hints were to be found in little details: When Luc was driven home, the car he sat in, had the number plate AUX-688 The next eliminated contestants were driven away with the same car, but one letter had changed in the number plate: HUX-688 The H reffered to the first letter of the Mole's name.
* In the library 'Hugo' was the answer of two questions: Victor Hugo and Hugo Claus
* There was also some symbolism that Hugo was in the dark room. Like a mole is blind.
* In that room you could read on the wall 'GA NAAR JUAN PALOMO' (go to juan palomo). With the letters of PALOMO, you could make OPA MOL, which is Dutch for grandpa Mole.
* The first word of every episode made a sentence:
De Mol is het verhaal van een reis... (The Mole is
a story about a journey..)
Mol zijn is vrij gemakkelijk... (Being a Mole is
very easy...)
Is inzet voor de proeven een garantie om in het
spel te blijven? (Is effort in challenges a guarantee to stay in the game?)
Hugo heeft gekozen voor de vrijstelling... (Hugo
chose for the exemption...)
En wat niemand verwacht had, gebeurde... (And what
nobody expected, happened...)
Alleen in Spanje. In een gezelschap waar ze niet
vorr gekozen hebben.(Alone in Spain. In a company they didn't choose for)
Hugo, Niki, Carine en Marianne... (Hugo, Niki,
Carine and Marianne...)
Natuurlijk was het nobel van Carine om Niki de
vrijstelling te gunnen (Of course it was noble of Carine to let Niki have the
exemption)
This makes: De Mol is Hugo en alleen Hugo natuurlijk (The Mole is Hugo and only Hugo of course)
