My
Emigration
by Anna Virkerman
It's
well known that it is very hard to immigrate, particularly for elderly.
At the time of immigration they have to change the country, the
culture, the habits and friends. And the most important is the language.
It means to change the whole life.
This process
is easier when we have such a sure friend and helper like Jewish
Family Service of Greater Hartford. Particularly the process of
assimilation would proceed more painfully without Jewish Family
Service. Maybe, it wouldn't be possible at all.
The first office
where the new Jewish immigrants come in the new country is Jewish
Family Service. Before they come, Jewish Family Service gives to
the relatives furniture and all what is necessary for life. During
the first four months Jewish Family Service completely supports
the families with monthly checks from the Jewish Federation and
services from Jewish Family Service. How important and nice that
Jewish Family Service organizes English classes and special classes
for citizenship for the elderly at the Beth Israel Synagogue for
free. For young people it means that they have the possibility to
study English. Jewish Family Service helps them to make the resume
and trains them for interviews. Then Jewish Family Service gives
addresses for the vacancies they know and helps them to get work.
Personally to
my family, Jewish Family Service helped straight away. The office
made an appointment with the doctor for my husband in two weeks
after we arrived instead of the usual four to five weeks. We didn't
even have our Medicaid cards, but Jewish Family Service guaranteed
the payment and the doctors saved my husband's life with a very
serious heart operation.
Jewish Family
Service assigns volunteers to New American families. The volunteers
are very helpful. My son's family had a family of volunteers that
became the best friends. I can't forget how pleasant it was when
the volunteers from Jewish Family Service brought a pram for my
daughter's little boy and a worker of Jewish Family Service brought
a lot of toys for the little one.
On the Jewish
holiday, Passover, Jewish Family Service congratulates the elderly
always and brings gifts to our homes. It is very important for us
their warm congratulations in their letters.
We can get an
answer on any question and get any advise at the office of Jewish
Family Service at any time.
I express my
deep heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Jewish Family Service who
helped and helps a lot the Jewish refugees to adapt in this hospitable,
great country of the United States of America. Let God bless all
the staff of Jewish Family Service for their hard and noble job.
