What America Means to Me
by Anna Virkerman
4/13/99
written shortly after becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen

What America means to me:
The feeling that I'm always free,
The nice feeling that I am Jew
And this is not a dream, it's true.

What America means to me:
The country that made my people free,
Gave the possibility to breathe,
For old people some good years increased.

What America means to me:
The smiles on faces I can see,
I am Jew and have all the rights
What are written in the "Bill of Rights."

What America means to me:
The place where Jewish life I see
The place that saved my husband's life,
Brought to my family sun's light.

What America means to me:
A law that makes me now free,
What a mother means to a child
What a husband means to a wife.

Let's all together say today:
For this great country we will pray,
God bless America for us,
This country helped and saved all of us!
