A.B.Normal was a pioneering effort. No we are not talking about the brain
donor in Mel Brooke's film "Young Frankenstein", but about Ravi J.Deka's
spoofy column on conspiracies,  paranormal events and the all evasive
truths. Printed in the Assam Tribune,  the fortnightly column ran for over
a year and is probably the first and so far  the only one of its kind in India.

LOST IN THE

JUNGLE

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visualised a valley of dinosaurs in their midst,  Aleister Mclean, a Nazi fortress and retired Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett knew it concealed a certain kind of "Z". Not forty winks, but the supposed last remains of Atlantis. Thus in 1925  he embarked on a mission to the heart of the Amazon in Brazil's Mato Grasso province to discover the hidden city.

A military engineer with a penchant for archaeology, his quest for  "Z" started when he came across a 18th-century document describing how a Portuguese explorer found an ancient walled city in the jungles.
His first expedition failed when his companions surrendered to the onslaught of insects and pests. So in 1925, sponsored by various newspapers and the Royal Geographical Society the 58 year old explorer ventured again. Accompanying him were his son, Jack, his friend Raleigh Rimell and two local guides. The British explorer's last letter home dated May 30 1925, after which nobody either heard from him or of "Z".

A 1928 search party found only a trunk believed to have belonged to them and the allegation that the three white men were killed by hostile Indian tribes. However as similar aggressive Indians also drove out the rescuers, nothing could be verified. An American reporter Albert de Winto who tried to track Col. Fawcett in 1930 also  vanished in the jungle.

Subsequent reports of an old Englishman living as an elite captive of a group of  Indians or those of meeting strange English-speaking people, came out of the region with amazing regularity, but without providing any serious clues. Various speculation were aired about Col.Fawcett and his companions fate, options probably limiting them to becoming an Anaconda's lunch, practise targets for the Indian's blowpipes or the possibility of meeting "the man who liked Dickens".

In 1956 a new twist came into the story with Dr. Henrique de Souse, president of the Succeeded de Teosofica Brasilia (Theosophical Society of Brazil) stating the receipt of a letter which said that Col. Fawcett was still alive and "living in a subterranean city in the Sera do Roncador in Matt Gross".
Simultaneously came the disclosure that the colonel's surviving son Brian Fawcett too received a letter in 1952 from a German settler living in Brazil, who wrote, "Your father and brother were advanced souls who were actually worshipped by the Indians and were alive in the subterranean cities of Matador and Araracauga in the Roncador section of Matt Gross... from these secret places issued Flying Saucers to make global reconnaissance flights." The full story features in Brian Fawcett's  book RUINS IN THE SKY (Hutchinson Ltd., London, 1957.).

Stories about underground cities existed in South America for ages and comprise an integral part of the local lore, invariably connected to UFO's. Thus SOCEX, a Brazilian Society for studying extraterrestrial started investigating the rampant reports of strange tunnels in the mountains of the country's Santa Catarina and Parana states. Among their many sources is a man identified as "J.D.", a guide  from Joinvile,S.C. who claims to have seen luminous flying saucers around at the tunnel's mouth and hearing a chorused singing underground. Another explorer dubbed N.C. said he had entered a tunnel in Rio Castor and ran into a beautiful young woman who spoke Portuguese and said she was 2,500 years old. The age factor was probably instrumental in preventing the mandatory sexual liaison.

Yarns or more politely, beliefs of high tech secret underground cities are seemingly as popular elsewhere, although the purported locations are invariably in S.America.
One popular theory includes non other than the father of the wireless Guglielmo Marconi and the grand wizard of electricity  Nicola Tesla. A former student of Tesla's, Marconi too gained his mentor's enigmatic status in the Latin circles having everything from ET connections to flying saucers attributed to him.

So when Marconi died in 1937 a multimillionaire, living on a luxury yacht, he was faking it!! What he actually did was, he took his yacht to South America founded a secret high-tech base in an extinct volcano crater in the jungles of Venezuela. Accompanying him were ninety-eight scientists who helped built a city. Here work progressed on solar energy, cosmic energy, anti-gravity and interstellar travel.  This story was first detailed in Robert Charroux's book "The Mysteries of the Andes" and was endorsed as true by a Mexican journalist named Mario Rojas Avendaro, who claimed to have investigated the Ciudad Subterranean de los Andes (Underground City of the Andes).

The story would be incomplete without the artificial thunderbolt man Tesla, so the theory runs that he too was picked up during the late 1930s by one of Marconi's saucer like crafts and whisked away into South America, enacting another faked death. Could it be that Linda Goodman was lying when she claimed to have communicated with his ghost in Colorado ?

On the more mundane side, allegations of a UFO stealing electricity and causing blackouts is currently going around in Chile. A very large, dark, disc shaped object is allegedly regularly seen near the Lago de Colbun hydroelectric dam in southern Chile approximately 200 kilometres from Santiago. Called "robones" (robbers) by the locals, the UFOs according to them come out of Lake Colbun near the high tension wires, absorbing electricity, absorbing water, and speed through the valley towards the  hydroelectric plant," coming within a few hundred meters of the dam before disappearing.  The crater Laboratory needing more juice for their experiments !!??
