An Appeal for - PLASTIC SURGERY & BURN DEPARTMENT S.M.S. HOSPITAL, JAIPUR (INDIA)

What is Rajasthan Welfare and Vikas Trust:
It is a non profit organization, working for the needy people at burn unit of Sawai Man Sing Hospital.

In September 2000, Dr P K Chhajer, Prof. & H.O.D. of Plastic Surgery & Burn Dept., met Shri Kailash Ladha and described pitiable condition of his Department and informed that there is an avoidable high mortality in the Burn Unit, which could be reduced if improvements are made. A rough estimate, was prepared which was over Rs. 2 Crores. At this meeting, a decision was taken to pool the required resources.

In the same month, The Government of Rajasthan hosted an International Rajasthani Conclave (IRC) attended by eminent Rajashanis from Indian as well as abroad. Inspired by this, Rajasthan Welfare & Vikas Trust (RWVT), a not profit, Charitable Trust, came into existence at Jaipur (India) in October 2000. Efforts were made to collect resources. From January 2001, as resources permitted, the trust started to do its bit, by extending a helping hand to needy patients with medicines, nourishing diet, providing room heaters in Burn Ward, bed side benches in Burn Ward, refrigerator for storing skin grafts, certain instruments in Operation Theater, and a Computer in the office of the dept.

During August 2001, Shri Ladha, in his personal visit to USA contacted "Rajasthan Medical Alumni Association Inc. (RAJMAAI)", a Non Resident Rajasthani (NRR) doctors Association, based in New York (USA). In their Annual convention 2001 held at Boston, members of RAJMAAI, essentially planted a 'sapling' to co-sponsor the project and in their recent Annual Convention 202, held in Ottawa (Canada),  made an enthusiastic and overwhelming commitment (more than 40 sponsor already) to nurture this project. They are planning to boost fund raising by uniting various NRI's especially those having 'roots in Rajasthan'.

Ideally Rajasthan needs a dedicated "State of Art" Burn and Plastic Surgery Hospital, and hopefully, someday the dream will materialize, but in the interim, we fell to work towards achieving a smaller goal of a S.M.S. Burn Unit. A proposal for creating an eight bet critical care Burn Unit to be constructed/remodeled to specifications by Government of Rajasthan which will also allocate appropriate space and funding for optimal staffing and day to day operations. This unit should have private isolation rooms, a nurse's station, physicians' offices and work area and procedure room.

The authorities in Hospital, Medical College and State Government have been regularly appraised of various problems and we are given to understand that they are seriously considering to allot an unused Neuro Surgery O.T to Plastic Surgery & Burn Ward Independently. The New OT complex need to be equipped with modern technology, machines and instruments (approx. cost 85 lacs). Simultaneously the authorities are requested to provide space for Critical care Burn Unit with required nurses, physicians' office , a work area , etc. with a provision for expansion (approx 1 Crores).
