Several climbers
are seen slowly picking their way up a snow bowl on the West Face
variation route. This is a predawn photo which captures some of
the immense silence of the still, frozen morning air. Starting the
climb during predawn hours is vital on Shasta since the hot summer
sun rapidly turns the consolidated frozen snow into an endless slog
through slush.
