My Gap Year in Chile
My name is Jackie Smithers, and recently I was selected to go on a gap year to Chile with an organisation called Project Trust. One major part of Project Trust is that they run a four day selection course on the remote island on Coll in Scotland. I went on selection on 16th - 20th August 2004. I have to raise 3950 for the year, and that covers the full 12 months abroad, plus loads of extras, like support.

So on this site you can follow my progress through to August next year, when I'll hopefully be flying off to Chile!
18/07/05 - Another long gap in between updates, but there hasn't been much to say. Leastways, now I've been on training, know more about my project, done work experience, got my ticket, got a date to go collect my visa in London, finished my exams and reached my fundraising target. All that has been in the last couple of weeks though! Training was brilliant, my project sounds great, my partner Leonoor is lovely and to have reached my target is a great relief!

30/05/05 - Haven't updated in ages - apologies. Firstly - didn;t do the bagpacking because I didn't think that I had enough helpers to make it worthwhile. Secondly - skydive hasn't yet happened because it was too windy on the 14th. Was going to go this week, but it's looking like raining all week, so I'm rethinking that one hastily because I've already paid for it! Total now stands at 3249, not including sponsorship. I've arranged work experience at my local primary school (my old school) and I've started learning Spanish. Yay! Also, found out my exact placement at the beginning of the month, and have sent my visa stuff off to my DO. I've added a Project page, and a training page to give everyone a bit more info. These will be a bit more detailed once I know more after training (11th-15th July!) School lessons are over, and I just have exams to go.

13/04/05 - I'm in this week's edition of the WHT -

12/04/05 - I'm currently in preparations for the next two events -
bagpacking at ASDA Hatfield on 30th April and a SPONSORED SKYDIVE on May 14th. Yes, I really am being that crazy. I think I am mad, but hey, if I can get some sponsorship in, I'm happy. But each of these requires help, especially the bag packing, so if you can give me any assistance, I'd be really grateful :D

22/03/05 - After declaring the lack of movement on my total, today it has moved up significantly! My Eggs in the Jar raised 51.50 and the Ayot WI have donated a bag full of items that I can use in a raffle or to sell. And best of all, a donation of 400 this morning from a charitable trust. Which makes my total over 3000!

21/03/05 - My total hasn't moved on much further, but I have a number of events planned, and have yet to count the cash from Guess the Eggs. I'm bagpacking at the end of April and doing a Sponsored Skydive in May, as well as starting to get a car boot sale sorted out.

02/03/05 - As we move into March my total stands at nearly 2700, which is brilliant. Sainsbury's in Stevenage are donating me an Easter Egg, which I shall use as a prize in a raffle, or as 2nd prize in my Guess the Eggs in the Jar. I also got sent a cheque from my old Rainbow Guide pack of 212.50 that was owed to me, but had been forgotten about! So that goes into the fund as well.
