My Project
Colegio Manuel Vicuna
The School
This project was started in March of this year when another project shut down. The first months have been really successful, and 2005/06 will be the first full year for volunteers at the school.

The school is located in the suburbs of the capital city, Santiago. The school was built in 2003 and has 350 pupils and 14 teachers. The school is a Fundacion Belen school - a charity that aims to bring good education to the poorer areas of Santiago.

Volunteers work as classroom assistants alongside other teachers, and work a full timetable. They are fully incorporated into lessons by the teachers. The school is very well resourced and has an English laboratory, computer room, libary, playing fields and areas of relaxation. The English Lab has resources for planning and using in lessons and there may be opportunity to decorate it.
Accomodation
Volunteers will live with a local family, which means they can get involved with all the aspects of the school, and gain an insight into Chilean day-to-day life. Vols can become part of Chilean society and gives them excellent opportunity to learn Spanish (yikes!)
Life in Chile
Chileans are patriotic and hospitable. Family life is important in Chile, and people may be surprised that people so young are spending a year away from their family, so make sure they are well looked after (yay!) The outlook of most Chileans is "Western" so European elements in taste and aspirations can be found, on a South American context.
