Merrion Square, Dublin Telefon Booth Ireland is a culture based on manners, except during sporting events.

The Painful Truth

Q.   Why is it that Americans have a reputation for being loud, rude and obnoxious?
A.   Because Americans are loud, rude and obnoxious.

Walking in to a bar in the U.S. and saying, "Gimme a beer" is acceptable. This is completely unacceptable in Ireland.   The Irish are far too polite to point out your rudeness but it has been noticed and you are now just another low-class Yank.

Yes, you are American.   Nobody cares.

You can never say please or thank you enough and keep in mind that they know far more about your culture than you do about theirs.   Did you know that Ireland has the youngest population in Europe?   Over half the population is under age 25.

Ireland is part of the European Union.   The currency is now the Euro.   ATMs are everywhere.

Large hotels are very expensive.   Small hotels, hostels and b&bs are cheaper and are much more fun.

Pubs are not just for drinking, they are also community centers.   This is where you come to visit with your neighbors, especially in smaller towns. You will see families in pubs.   Tipping a bartender is optional.   Tipping a taxi driver is not.   10% in either case is acceptable.

By American standards, customer service is not very good; that's just the way it is.
