A symbol is often defined as an everyday object, animal, event, or person
who has extraordinary meaning and significance attached to it. For example,
an apple is used to symbolize one of the largest cities in the world.
Two snakes wrapped around a stick has come to symbolize the profession
of medicine. A skull and crossbones means poison or toxic.

Some symbols are made up while others are inherited by history.
For example, a six-pointed star has come to represent the people
of Israel, the eagle now represents the United States, and a dove
represents peace. However, often authors of poems make up symbols
that go along with their story or poem. For example, Cervantes'
Don Quixote symbolizes a hero who is defeated by the realities
of life. Melville's great white whale, Moby Dick, represents the
mystery of evil.
Authors use symbols to suggest layers and layers of meanings,
instead of simply opening up and saying what they want to say.
Some symbols suggest so many rich meanings that the significance
has never fully been understood. Symbols make the reader look
more deeply into the piece of writing. "A symbol is like a pebble
cast in the water: It sends off many ever-widening ripples of
meaning" (Elements of Literature, Fourth Course. Page 248)

The following poem is written by a girl in my class
Just like you
By Angel
Walking down the stairs
As I came upon the sunlight
I saw large, red, flowering bougainvilleas
Red, just like your car
The garden was empty,
Just like you
Full of loeliness
And hatred
Grass was dead,
Pale and yellow
Just like your hair, whenever
It had blobs of gel in it
The noise from the street
Breaks my pain
Just like your harmful words
And your sweet vain
Cars, trucks, and bikes race
In some hurry
Just like my heart
When I worry for you
Dirt is all broken
All over the sidewalk
Just like every time
You said a lie to me
Underneath a big tree
I feel a cutting cool breeze
Just like how i felt when
Found out you were cheating on me
I close my eyes
Trying to forget your love
But it is so hard
Especially when we did so much
A plant blocks my path
It leaves all droopy and dead
Just like the way I felt
When I saw you with someone else
Everything reminds me of you
The plants, trees, the breeze,
You hurt me so much
And you would never understand
Because you are a man
No a boy, and you do not care
Not even one bit
All you care is about yourself
I bet you never sat down
To think how I felt
How I felt about your whole
Idea of love
On how you left me
Left me for someone else
Someone who ended up
Hurting you too
Now I bet
You look back
And wish you never left me
And you now want me back
For once, you think
You think about me
You never thought about me once
When we were together
But too bad, us is not
In my mouth anymore
Us is no longer
Existent
For I no longer want you
I do not want your love
Even if I suffer
Because I do really love you
But there is nothing I can do
Nothing at all
To replace or change what you did
The pain, the trust
For I do not want a liar
Or a cheater
Or someone who does not
Care at all, for what I want
Who am I fooling?
Of course I want you
I would die for your love
I dream every night that I have you
Everything reminds me of you
Even a rose
It is just like you
With so many petals
Gorgeous
Beautiful
No matter how you look
At it
But us is not possible
For I can't have you
You are not the one
The one who I can trust
The one who I can say
Won't do this or that
The one who will not leave me
In the middle of a party
The one who will be with me
All of the time
The one who will love me
For me, not what I have
The one who will enjoy
Being with me
Not complaining every minute
Because he cannot get what he wants
I turn around now
And see the door
It just sits there
Not moving
Just like you
