Chew on this: Nicki's perfect picks edge hot dog hero for year's top featNicole can't wolf down dozens of hot dogs in one sitting, but
she can predict a bunch of NFL games to perfection in just 30 seconds. It's that extraordinary
skill that netted the 15-year-old freshman People magazine's 2007 award for
"Most Amazing Personal Achievement in America." Until Nicki's incredible Sunday, the award appeared to be headed to Joey Chestnut of San Jose, California. The 24-year-old freak consumed a world-record 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes at Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island in New York. Chestnut defeated six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi, who ate 63. But magazine editors ultimately chose brains over brawn. "Eating a crapload of wieners like that demonstrates great determination, but there's no brainpower required in that achievement," said Editor Mark Golin of People.com. "In fact, one could argue that you're lacking brainpower by causing yourself an emergency trip to the bathroom that could last hours." Nicole's work of genius in Week 14 was the best outcome in the 28-year history of the Sunday Football Picks. The previous record was D.J.'s 12-0 week in 2001. Nicki's blessings along the way included an overtime victory, a last-second touchdown pass, a field goal that clanked off the uprights, and a pregame switch from the Bucs to the Texans after hearing a cloudy forecast for Houston. Everything tipped in her favor. Runners-up for the People award were Peyton Manning, who won his first Super Bowl and the game's MVP when the Colts beat the Bears; Spider-Man for grossing $336.5 million in his third movie to edge "Shrek the Third" and "Transformers"; and Britney Spears, who earned the title of "Most Searched Person on the Internet" for the sixth time in seven years after shaving her head, fighting with K-Fed over alimony and child custody, and giving a disastrous performance at MTV's Video Music Awards. "We're actually quite relieved to be putting someone other than Britney Spears on our year-end magazine cover," Golin said. "The photo we took this week of Nicole winking with her thumb up is a classic. America will love it!" More history was made Sunday as Nicole's twin sister Alicia went 13-1 in the Picks. Their combined record of 27-1 is thought to be the best NFL predictions by identical twins on any given Sunday in the history of the world. That's major mental firepower, and definitely worth celebrating. Perhaps with a heaping plate of tasty hot dogs. |
