
Gods in the Shrine
In
the Past
The Chinese opera was traditionally employed to perform on seven main occasions:
1. The birthday of holy gods in the shrine (Shoudanxi) (14th 16th of waxing moon month 8).
2. Anniversary of build the shrine, the autumn festival (Shiguxi) (month 7).
3. Vegetable festival (Chizaixi, month 9)
(Kornuntakeit, 2004)
4. Thanks giving (Xiexianxi)
(month 10-11).
5. New years celebration (Piuanxi)
(15th of month 1)
6. Kea bon (Making requests of various things, if their wishes are granted.)
7. The festival remembering the death of holy figures (Huangshenxi)
In the Present Day
There
are three main occasions which
opera performs:
1. New Year’s celebration (Piuanxi)
(15th
of month 1),
2. The Autumn Festival (Shiguxi) (month 7)
3. Thanksgiving (Xienxianxi, month 10-11).
The purpose of New Year’s celebration
(Piuanxi) performance is wishing to have
a good life.
In the month of the Autumn Festival (Shiguxi), most Chinese opera would be in Malaysia. The purpose of performing on this day is remembering the dead.
Thanks giving (Xienxianxi), has the Chinese opera performance in the November and December, to thank the holy gods that look after Chinese people and ensure a good life all year.
