In the past
There would be a crowd of Chinese people of every age, when the Chinese opera started and finished its performance. Some audience who were not Chinese would watch for a while, because of the beautiful costumes and voices of performers.
Most of the audience are old people who were young when Chinese opera was at its peak. There were children and their parents using Chinese opera as an opportunity to go out and have some entertainments. Most Thai audiences did not understand much about the story, but they are interested in the beautiful costumes, make up, and the voices of performers.
Chinese people do not watch Chinese opera, because it is not as interesting as the series on television. On some performance days, after 10 in the evening, there were no audience, but the performers had to perform for the holy gods.
Even the Chinese opera using Thai language had no more audience than that using Chinese language. After 10 in the evening, all of them had small audience.
