In the Past

The Chinese opera’s platform was built with simple things: bamboos, wooden sheets and mats or carpets. The standard platform was square; the size depended on the space. There was no curtain as in Western theater; therefore the scene was set when they performed. The performers had to exit on the right and enter on the left.

For the props, there were only two chairs and one wooden table for all settings as the prison, the King’s throne, the house of a farmer and so forth.

In the Present Day

The platform of the Chinese opera was made of the wooden sheets and carpet, but the floor of the platform is a parallelogram.

There is a curtain as the Western theater; therefore they can change sets behind the curtain. The entrance and the exit were not fixed as fomerly because of the curtain.

To develop modern Chinese opera setting, there are many types of lights: tone light, sport lights and moon lights to create the atmosphere and symbolized the feeling of the characters.
