“To travel with just a mat and a pot”, the expression described Chinese migrants to Thailand (Sukphisit, 2002), but they did not only bring a mat and a pot, but also traditions, beliefs, and arts. Over 200 years ago, the Chinese community was formed in Thailand. There are many traditions, beliefs, and arts that have been maintained by these people.

The Chinese opera is one of the traditions, beliefs and arts which has been performed in Thailand for two centauries. The Chinese opera is well known in Thailand as “Ngiou (งิ้ว)”. It blends together with dance, theater, music, art of costumes and acrobatics. After a short period, Chinese opera became famous in Thai society because of the beautiful costumes and the voices of the performers. But at the present time only elderly people like to watch it. There were many factors that made the Chinese opera not as popular as it used to be in the past. Those factors are due to the negative perceptions of the Chinese performers, the decreasing audiences, the interest of audiences in new forms of entertainments and so forth.

Nowadays, there have been transformations of the Chinese opera in Thailand, in term of performers, language, stories, musical instruments, make-up, costumes settings and audience. The occasions in which it has been performed are also different from thoses in the past. Therefore, this website will provide the informations about these transformations and what factors have influenced them.
