I have heard of Bonnie Raitt but not her songs, and I was not curious to hear her musical pipes as she is a country singer. I was not raised to like country music, so the taste for the genre has been undeveloped, until Leann Rimes, Shania Twain and Trisha Yearwood made the crossover to pop, and I started taking notice how beautiful country music can be. Still I was ignorant of Bonnie Raitt until Constantine Maroulis, an American idol Season 4 contestant sang "I Can't Make You Love Me". I was mesmerized. The song called for raw emotions, and even though I had no personal experience relative to the song at that time, the lobe of my brain that has the sappy center went into an overdrive.

Google finally revealed who the original singer of the song is. Of course, it goes without saying that the song was originally country (although it sounds like pop to me). I was surprised not because it is country (I like Trisha Yearwood's The Song Remembers When, and that really reek country), but I always had this image of Bonnie Raitt singing songs similar to Kenny Rogers' (not to say his songs are bad, just that I have yet to find a song of his that I can call a favorite). And I'm glad I'm wrong about her. While Constantine Maroulis' version is mesmerizing, with Raitt's I was spellbound.
