History
The Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Ice Hockey League (CPIHL) was
formed in 1994 to promote High School ice hockey in the Central Pennsylvania
Area. In it's inaugural season, the League was comprised of eight teams
at the Varsity level. For the 2005-2006 season the League will have 42
teams at the Varsity level (grades 9-12), 38 teams at the Junior High level
(grades 6-9) and 10 teams at the JV level (grades 9-11).
Philosophy
The CPIHL exists to develop and promote hockey with the express intention
of having hockey accepted as a PIAA-sanctioned sport at the Varsity level.
In order to attain this goal, hockey must become a statewide sport, organized
around our school districts, with a playoff format that eventually leads
to a state championship. Selected teams represent the CPIHL in the Flyer’s
Cup tournament (East Division); the winner of this tournament plays the
recipient of the Penguin’s Cup (West Division) for the state championship.
Alignment
The League is divided into 2 Tiers: Tier I is for the higher-skilled teams
and is comprised of 12 teams from PIAA District 3. Tier I is divided into
2 divisions: East and West. Tier II is larger, and is comprised (typically)
of teams from smaller school districts with less mture hockey programs.
Tier II is divided into 3 divisions: Capital Area, Lancaster/Lebanon/Berks
and York.
There are playoffs at the end of the regular season for Varsity teams only,
since the CPIHL considers Junior High and JV levels to be developmental.
The top 8 Tier I teams compete for the Bear's Cup; the top teams from each
Tier II division compete for the Viola Cup.
Governance
The CPIHL must play within rules and policies established by the Atlantic
Amateur Hockey Association (a USA Hockey affiliate) and USA Hockey. These
rules dictate such things as team bench size, player age restrictions and
coaching requirements, and are not at the discretion of the CPIHL or member
Clubs to change or ignore.
