Practice and game schedules represent the single biggest dissatisfier for our members - and it's an issue that's totally out of our control.
Here are some of the constraints that will help you understand (even if you still don't like) the method to the madness:
First, there are physical limitations. Hockey must be played on ice - and
the number of facilities we can use are very limited. In addition to the
CPIHL game and practice requirements, most rinks support travel leagues,
their own house leagues, and (gasp!) figure skating in order to be economically
viable. Ice slots are very limited - and almost as precious as gold. Our
practice slots and game schedules are severely impacted by this restriction;
remember, 42 other organizations in the CPIHL alone want them as well.
Second, there are scheduling restrictions on the game slots. The League's
intent is to showcase the Varsity teams, with the goal of having the sport
accepted by the school districts and (eventually) PIAA sanctioned. With
42 participating Varsity teams, plus their JV and Junior High programs,
the needs of the JV and Junior High teams often take a back seat to scheduling
the Varsity games.
Third is the time restrictions of our volunteers, especially our coaching staff. Unlike most community sports programs, there are certification requirements for our coaches that are based on USA Hockey regulations. Unless you meet those requirements, you cannot coach hockey at this level. Most of our coaches are also involved in refereeing or coaching travel teams. The constraints on their time are enormous, so respecting their schedules and accommodating them are in the best interest of this club.
