This page includes two interrelated sections:
It may seem to be beneath your dignity to read about proper relationships on a group. This section may not apply to you. However, The Other Shul has removed offensive subscribers in the past. If you do indeed use the proper tact when in touch with others, then you can skip this section. If you're not sure, then perhaps you should read it.
Let's begin with a basic premise: The Other Shul is not meant for everybody. The same can be said about all of our other Jewish and Hebrew groups.
The Other Shul is restricted to those who want to share a pleasant discussion among friends, on issues that are important to all of us, and in our defined scope and area. We accept people who share and adhere to our groups standards, criteria, goals, objectives, guidelines, regulations, spirit, moods, and beliefs.
The group moderator helps subscribers remember their obligations. He posts messages that are not inimical to the progress or atmosphere of the group as a whole.
Indeed, the very fact that subscribers realize that their messages are subject to review often raises the level of their postings. Subscribers in moderated groups usually do try to be more careful in their tone, speech, content, and method of presenting their points of view.
In principle, any subscriber can raise any relevant issue on the group as long as it is presented in good faith.
However, The Other Shul deals with sensitive topics, so we will need to use a great deal of tact. Not everything can be raised in public without upsetting some people.
This is not an issue of right and wrong. This is an issue of alienating good people because issues were not presented in the proper manner.
The subscribers intent is the factor to consider. Those who are confused or would like to clarify issues in Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform thought may present them on The Other Shul. Those who are new to Judaism and don't want to be confused by the issues related on The Other Shul should raise their issues on Jewish Beginnings.
Having said that, it is important to clarify that all discussions on Jewish and Hebrew groups are restricted to Jewish points of view. We do not clarify or compare the beliefs of other religions. To clarify: Comparative religion or polemics may be raised only on our Shandeh group, and with very strict limitations on that group as well, and not on any of the other groups.
We assume an acceptance of Judaism and search for a deeper understanding of the Jewish religion. We will not relate to other religions. They may be mentioned as a means of clarifying a question about Judaism, but the subsequent discussion shall relate exclusively to Judaism. We will not allow discussions that intend to compare Judaism with any other religion.
There have been occasional requests for liberality on this issue. Let us put all future requests to rest, with a reminder that this group is about The Other Shul. A shul is a uniquely Jewish institution. It can be discussed only in relation to Jews.
