The Other Shul presents a "safe" atmosphere in which Jews can present concerns and feelings about certain sensitive topics - the friction and anxiety among those who proclaim themselves to be Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform. This differs from our other groups, in which the direction follows a certain pattern.

That doesn't mean that the moderator or the subscribers necessarily support all of these approaches. It simply means that subscribers to the group will be able to communicate with each other. That's quite an achievement in today's world.

The group won't change the world. However, Jews may lower their animosity towards other Jews, and may understand or accept them (if not embrace them) for what they are.

Thus, The Other Shul is clearly controversial. It deals with issues that many people prefer to avoid in friendly company. It goes beyond a simple "I'm right and you're wrong" or "keeping up with the times." Our civilized discussions on The Other Shul often differ from that which is rampant on the Internet and within Jewry as a whole.

We do have a good idea of what to expect on the group. After all, The Other Shul was closed in 2001-2002 for an extended period of time in order to resolve certain issues. We don't want that to happen again.

In order to prevent a recurrence of these issues, we have carefully created a series of ground guidelines. We take them quite seriously.

The special guidelines for The Other Shul supplement the guidelines for all of the other Jewish and Hebrew groups. This entire set of groups has general guidelines and guidelines. Subscribers to The Other Shul accept those guidelines as well.

The guidelines may be changed by mutual agreement and discussion.
