This village is one of the smallest on "Osteroey" having approximately 370 inhabitants. The soil is very futile supporting a rich flora. The mountains behind "Bruvik" rise almost vertically towards the sky. The tallest mountain is "Bruviknipa" reaching 822 m above the sea level. On the mainland across the fjord from "Bruvik" is the
village "Vaksdal". The first
church was built at "Bruvik"
around year 1200, and was
either a "laftet" church built
of timber, or a small church
constructed from rocks. This
old church was located close
to the same location where
the church is today.
The main way of making a
living at "Bruvik" was of
course farming. In addition
people were hunting and
fishing in the fjord next to
"Bruvik".
There has also been industry here producing fabrics, wool blankets, and knitted bed covers ("Bruvik Fabrikker"). This factory was however closed down in 1987. In addition, a small shipyard has been located here ("Kaland Baatbyggeri").
To day fish farming is an important industry at "Bruvik".
Hiking and camping have an excellent staring point at "Bruvik". If you want to visit "Bruviknipa" and "Rispingen/Olsnesfjellet", the trails are well marked starting from the parking lot at "Baataleitet" at "Bruviksdalen".
