Post poll results in Mizoram

more uncertain than ever

Editorial © Political equations by all means have gone awry this time in Mizoram. While the countdown for the assembly polls has begun, several incidents in rapid succession during the last few months has upset the pre-conceived notions held by poll-forecasters, observers and politicians alike. Meanwhile, the electorate this time is yet to show any signs of sweep or wave that can be credited to the favor of any party.

More than any other party, the recent events have affected the Congress, posing serious dilemmas and a serious identity crisis for the party. Stuck between national agenda and a regional ground reality, the party leadership in New Delhi has had to compromise its much-publicized stance of corruption free governance by projecting Mizoram Congress President, Lalthanhawla, the next chief ministerial candidate, the serious corruption charges against him notwithstanding.

The statewide agitation launched by all party led Save Mizoram Committee (SMC) aimed at wooing the majority Mizo voters has polarized the minority Bru and Chakma communities of the state, who had so far voted alternately for the Congress and the Mizo National front (MNF). Inroads made by the BJP and rise of splinter groups within, Election commissions recognition to the Hmar Peoples Convention (HPC) have further made any post-poll political forecasting a nightmarish job.

The anti- Myanmarese wave that saw the selective targeting of thousands of Myanmarese immigrants and their mass exodus since end-July this year and the reclusive stance and inaction of political parties cautious enough to avoid siding with any faction throughout the tussle would cast serious shadows on the political alignment of the immigrant community. A sizeable section of the Myanmarese had settled in Mizoram for several decades, enjoying voting rights and owing immovable property. The ethnic links of the Myanmarese links with a large section of Mizo population strengthened considerably by family ties. The damage to cross border informal trade worth crores controlled mainly by Myanmarese immigrants in Mizoram promises repercussions that add to the poltical uncertainty of the coming polls.
