1 dead in house collapse resulting from collapse of retaining wall
Aizawl Oct 20: A retaining wall newly constructed on the Tennis Court - Dinthar road near the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) building in Tuikual South today collapsed taking with it the Assam-type building below it resulting in the death of a CRPF jawan sleeping in the house.
According to house owners nearby, the impending collapseof the retaining wall was felt at about 2:30 in the morning when a forerunner of the wall collapse began. However, since the first fall of rocks proved not too dangerous, people inside the houses in the surrounding areas went back to sleep.
After daylight, with rain falling incessantly, more rocks began to fall from the retaining wall. When the final fall occured at around 8 am, most of the people from the house that was swept away by the retaining wall had left the house.
The two-storeyed house, occupied by four families, was swept downward by the fall of cubic stones, earth and a cement water tank of the PHE and stopped by a concrete building below it. Three people were trapped inside the house at the time of the collapse of which three were unhurt and the fourth, a newly married CRPF jawan posted at the Raj Bhavan, Rampal Yadav of Haryana, was crushed to death.
The wife of the deceased had been led out of the house seconds before the collapse.
The body of Yadav will be flown to Haryana Monday from Silchar.
A 20 year-old girl, trapped inside the house for about twenty minutes before she was rescued, had a miraculous escape when their refrigerator stopped the floor above her from crushing her. She had gone back inside the house to retrieve warm clothes when the house was swept away.
When rescuers found her, she was bent over, stuck between two beds, with the plank floor of the above apartment just inches from her head, propped up by the refrigerator.
Rescue work was carried out quickly by the local people within a few minutes of the wall collapse.
The house that was swept away, belonging to a widow, is situated right next to Lunglei District deputy commissioner Tawnluaias house.
The retaining that collapsed Sunday morning had been constructed to reinforce a recent collapse of the road wall which had blocked the Tennis Court - Dinthar road for many days in July of this year.
The Chief Secretary HV Lalringa and Opposition Leader Lalhmingthanga, both of whom live nearby, arrived on the scene of the tragedy quickly, giving moral and monetary support to the rescue workers.
Aizawl DC Ropianga was also quickly on the scene. He is, incidentally, the younger brother of Tawnluaia. RS MP Lalhmingliana also visited the Tuikual South retaining wall collapse today.
Two other landslides occurred in the city at Armed Veng and Republic Veng. These, however, did not do any damage. A landslide is in danger of occurring at Dinthar locality and a nearby house has been vacated.
In still another landslide incident, a Bolero vehicle was stuck in a landslide at Rengte Hill, near Kolasib on Saturday night. It has, however, been pulled out and the road is being cleared for vehicular traffic.
