Of magic and potions
An inmate of the state's Central jail recently committed suicide believing he was under the spell of a sorcerer. Last year, a man who was said to be a sorcerer had denounced his profession after finding Christ. The most recent in this realm is the arrest of two persons in connection with robbing infants' dead bodies from their graves and using the body parts for sorcery. All these have a connection with Myanmar, a Buddhist country where white and black magic are still said to be in vogue.
In a land that is professed to be the land of Christians, this phenomena must be dealt with at its infancy before it really take roots in the state. In this regard, the church is an important ingredient and have to play a crucial role. The latest assembly of the Presbyterian Church has advocated the opening of a mission field in China. While this is very well for those who are thinking of the millions of non-Christians in that country, we may be neglecting those nearer to us.
Mizoram's eastern neighbour is Myanmar, a Buddhist land. In such countries, black magic and sorcery are commonly found unlike in Christian countries. With the black arts now starting to insinuate itself into the Mizo society, which prides itself in it's cent per cent Christian status, quick action to destroy it at its source is needed. The best weapon against sorcery is the Gospel. God forbids any kind of indulgence in sorcery because it involves demons, Satan's, helpers, who is God's nemesis.
The Church, therefore, needs to take up a drive in sending missionaries to this neighbouring country of ours before looking further afield. It must be remembered that this is one area where there is no political solution. If the Church fails to act quickly, the next generation of Mizos could be mixing sorcery with the Gospel.
