Cong wants to make sure voters cast ballots

Aizawl Oct 10:The Aizawl District Congress Congress Committee today met the Aizawl District Deputy Commissioner C Ropianga to discuss problems of non-casting of ballots by voters at Village Council elections.

The ADCC members, led by their president R Lalzirliana MLA told the deputy commissioner that to ensure voters cast their ballots, male and female police personnel must be posted at every polling booth to check pockets, bags and other receptacles of voters who have come out of the enclosure to ensure that voters do not pocket the ballots and that the ballots had been deposited in the appropriate boxes.

The Congress members said they had a cordial discussion with the deputy commissioner and they have every reason to believe that their suggestions would be carried out.

In the Mizoram VC election voting system, every candidate has a separate ballot box which is kept inside an enclosure with all the other boxes of other candidates.

A voter, after he has been given his ballot papers, enters the enclosed area and deposits his ballot papers in his choice of ballot boxes.

Since no one is allowed to see the voter casting his ballots, a voter can take out his ballot papers without anyone the wiser whether he had cast his votes or not. A voter can then dispose of his ballot papers for cash or kind.
