Quick to communalise

Editorial © David M. Thangliana In an environment that tolerates no one else other than tribal people, the political parties in the state are much too quick to colour situations in a communal tone where any non-Mizo is involved. This kind of communalism has to stop in a country that is as diverse as ours. However, the leaders at the Centre are too quick to take to communalism which could be taken a sign of encouragement in the less accessible parts of the country.

The hue and cry made about Sonia Gandhi, Hindu versus Muslims/Christians, uppercastes versus lower castes all these have to stop if we are to live in harmony.

The state of Mizoram, much touted as the only Christian state in the country by the Mizos, has much to do to lead the people of India towards a more friendly atmosphere in the country. As a Christian state, political parties must try not to indulge in mud slinging and blackening of names as much as the situation may warrant because of the Christian doctrine.

It may be right to separate religion from politics. However, we cannot separate religion from our social life which is the real politics of the land. As such, Christian teachings must permeate into the lives of the Mizos as well as politics if Mizos are to show that Christinaity is a better religion than other religions.

However, in view of the present social, economic and poltical situation of the state, the Mizos religion, Christianity, does not appear to be any different from other religions.

However, this is beside the point and what needs to be done is to see that our actions and thoughts do not hurt others. The words of Jesus Christ may be remembered who said, "Do to others what you would others do to you." If we want to be treated right, then we must treat others right. If we want respect from others, we must respect others too.

As much as we value our land and culture, it may be ourselves that is destroying it from within, and not outside forces. This must always be remembered and a time for introspection kept apart from time to time in times of strife and trouble. We are a part of a great nation, a nation that is not Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist, but a nation made up of all people and all religions which is not found anywhere else in the world. From the poorest beggar to the richest industrialist, from the ordinary voter to the president, we are all Indians living in a land that is as diverse as the people themselves.
