Power CE apologise for causing hardship
Aizawl Oct 10 : The Power & Electric Chief Engineer today apologised for having caused hardships to the people through the recent power tarrif hike.
Speaking at the annual general conference of the Electricity Technical Staff Association, P & E CE B Lalrinliana said, "While the power tarrif hike was implemented to inculcate in the consumers the need to conserve electrical energy, we had not given enough thought to the hardships that would befall them through the hike. We ask forgiveness for our lapse and I wish to assure the public that there was no thought of harming the peoples welfare or the government when the tarrif hike was suggested and implemented."
Explaining as to why the second tarrif hike had been put in place, Lalrinliana said while it was to supplement the revenue income of the government, it was also in part to educate the public for the need to conserve energy.
"The energy charge was upped from Rs 1.60 per average unit to Rs 2.10 per average unit as per the advice of the Central authorities and was implemented from August 1, 2002. It was hoped that through this tarrif hike, Rs 5.9 crore would be received through the Additional Resources Mobilisation.
"The resulting hike was 25% in all the slabs of 1 - 50 kwh @ Re 1 for all units, 51 - 100 kwh @ Rs 1.60 for all units, 101 - 200 kwh @ Rs 2.10 for all units and 200 kwh and above @ Rs 2.50 for all units.
"While the tarrif hike was in part a mobilisation of resources, the other part was to educate the people that energy cannot be wasted. Any wastage on the part of the consumer would come to his bill, thus ensuring that energy is conserved."
Lalrinliana also said the tarrif hike was also implemented so as to impart awareness to the consumer that it was more practical to pay through the metering system when this is done with conservation of energy in mind than to tamper with meters.
The Centre would start talks with elected representatives of the people and the Opposition to resolve the vexed issue, Advani said.
Pakistan's designs to target democracy in Jammu and Kashmir through cross-border terrorism were defeated by the people of the state who participated in the Assembly elections braving terrorist's threat, Advani said. Pakistan had been sponsoring cross-border terrorism to create terror by killing innocent people, but this time its target was democracy.
The free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir is a "victory for India and triumph of democracy". The world community has accepted that the elections were free and fair inspite of militant threats and it was a victory for democracy, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
The elections are over in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan is going to the polls with two of its former Prime Ministers' debarred from contesting, he said, adding the flourishing democracy in India and dictatorship in Pakistan presented a picture of contrast.
