US Involved in Taiwan Election -- a disturbing report Pro-Independence Parties Defeated in Taiwan -- NY Times 2004年臺灣民權侵犯報告-- 中文版
What Americans Don't Know about Taiwan's Election... During Mr. Chen Shuibien's presidency, he intensified ethnic tensions. Months before the 2004 presidential election, Chen throw in two referendum tickets onto the ballot, unlawfully, designed to distract the election. 19 hours before the election, an "assassination" took place, when Chen campaigned on an "unsecured" civilian jeep. Rumors quickly spread that the opposition parties jointed hands with the Mainland to “assassinate” him. On the day of election 200,000 police and military personal were prohibited from voting, citing “national emergency” due to the assassination. Days after the election, people found out that Chen suffered minor cuts across his abdomen, and many questions unanswered. Eight months after the act, independent investigation initiated by the Legislative Yuan were stopped by the Executive Yuan. Worse, the shooting incident remained as a low profile criminal case that the local police arrested no one, and made absolutely no progress about the assassination attempt... The opposition parties initiated re-count effort and cited more than 900,000 fraudulent election ballots. Can anyone explain how these can happen in Taiwan where "democracy" should have already taken root? |
