******************************************************************************************************

I've now decided to use this page MAINLY as a "reservoir" for fresh Dylan news that are not anymore so fresh. On this page you will now also find old news about the changes that I've made to Slow Train pages.

Here you have also many links. As time goes by, things change, especially the information what you see when you use a link. So you have to keep that in mind when you use these OLD links. I don't have time to check them all the time, so if you notice a broken link or if you can't use a link given here anymore, just let me know and I'll remove that link. But it's up to you to inform me if any of these links don't work anymore...

SOME OLD DYLAN NEWS WITH LINKS (TOP)

MAY 2008

This year's Pulitzer Prizes in honored two musical innovators who tend to reject categorization: A special citation went to singer-songwriter Dylan, and the annual music award went to composer and Los Angeles native David Lang.In an interview Monday, Lang enthusiastically mixed metaphors: "You know, I am not fit to touch the hem of his shoes. Bob Dylan is the only artist who's in heavy rotation in my household." He added, "I told my children I won the Pulitzer, and they were like, 'OK, big deal.' But when I said, 'OK, they gave a special award to Bob Dylan, just like me,' they said, 'Oh, this is really something.' "
The 66-year-old Dylan, who said he was "in disbelief," was cited for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." His award marks the first Pulitzer given to a rock musician.(source: LOS ANGELES TIMES)

DECEMBER 2007
The most talked Dylan subject during December has been I'm Not There, which has been shown in Cinema theatres all over the world. At the moment in Finland there is only one theatre that shows I'm Not There. So, two weeks ago I travelled 200 km to Helsinki to see this film and I had to say that it is quite interesting one and I think every Dylan fan should see it, although some Dylan experts may think that there is not much new information to get. Anyhow, it is always a wonderful experience to see and hear Dylan on BIG screen!
A big thanks for everyone who have visited these humble pages during 2007! Today we have had the first visitor from ARGENTINA. So far NEW MORNING has had visitors from 34 countries and I thank you all and hope that many new countries will join us during 2008!

ABOUT THE NEW RECORD

Chris Silva, executive director of the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie told the press that he had tried to get Dylan there for 14 years and now he finally succeeded! Silva told also that during the four days Bob spent there he played old blues and rock'n'roll and also "Hawaiian tinged music". He had a slide guitar, a fiddle and pedal steel players. Bob himself played keyboards and Tony Garnier played bass as usual.

Silva also told that Bob was very "low-key" in jeans playing 4-5 hours every day. There was also a lot of conversation about the keyes. They played slow versions and fast verions of those new songs. Silva was amazed about how much Bob was willing to experiment and risk, he always wanted to try something new and "he never took a break".

Music icon Bob Dylan spent four days at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie last week, privately rehearsing and writing music for an album he is set to record this week in Manhattan.

And here's the news link: POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL 1

Ian Woodward tells that whilst Dylan was in Dublin, he went to Westland Studios to do some recording and according rumour he and the band recorded four songs on Monday 28.November 2005. It is possible that they were recording on other days too. So,time will tell if these are the first tapes of the upcoming new studio album. Some rumour claims that it will be released in Mars 2006, but I think it's not gonna happen so soon! Maybe during summer / autumn 2006...

December 2005

Will Dylan perform in BRAZIL in 2006???
"The flurry of concerts by foreign performers in Brazil -- Iggy Pop, Chick Corea, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana and Donna Summer are all scheduled in coming months -- is among the most visible signs of the country's expanding economy and strengthening currency. Sales of French cheese, Argentine wine and Italian Ferraris are surging."

Will NET continue and when??? Bob seems to be changing his job. See news below...

Bob will start working as a DJ in XM Satellite Radio!

XM Satellite Radio, the nation's leading satellite radio service with more than 5 million subscribers, today announced that Bob Dylan will host a new music show exclusively for XM, marking the first time the music legend has hosted a radio show. The show will debut in March 2006 on XM's deep album rock channel Deep Tracks (XM channel 40).

The weekly hour-long music show will feature an eclectic mix of music hand-selected by Dylan. In addition, Dylan will offer regular commentary on music and other topics, host and interview special guests including other artists and will take emails from XM subscribers.

"Songs and music have always inspired me. A lot of my own songs have been played on the radio, but this is the first time I've ever been on the other side of the mic," said Dylan. "It'll be as exciting for me as it is for XM."

Bob Dylan is one of music's most enduring performers. He has released more than 44 albums containing more than 600 songs that have been covered by more than 2,000 different artists ranging from The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder and Guns N' Roses to Duke Ellington, Garth Brooks, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine. His last two albums have been critical and popular successes with 1997's Time Out Of Mind garnering three Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year. In 2001, he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for the song "Things Have Changed." In 2004 his best selling memoir, Chronicles Volume 1, spent 19 weeks on the New York Times' Bestseller List. For the past eighteen years Mr. Dylan has been a mainstay on the concert stage performing over a hundred shows a year around the globe.

"Bob Dylan epitomizes the American music experience and his unflagging integrity and vision defines everything we hope for XM to be," said Lee Abrams, Chief Creative Officer, XM Satellite Radio. "It is an honor to count Bob Dylan among the members of the XM artist family, and is further testimony of XM's commitment to create original music programming that makes a difference."

XM is America's number one satellite radio service with more than 5 million subscribers. Broadcasting live daily from studios in Washington, DC, New York City and Nashville at the Country Music Hall of Fame, XM's 2005 lineup includes more than 160 digital channels of choice from coast to coast: the most commercial-free music channels, plus premier sports, talk, comedy, children's and entertainment programming; and 21 channels of the most advanced traffic and weather information. Please visit http://www.xmradio.com .

This recording is offered for sale without copyright, broadcast rights, performers' consents and other reproduction rights. The Buyer must apply to the relevant parties to obtain such clearance and consents as may be necessary.

Lot Notes During 1961, his first year as a struggling folksinger in New York City, Bob Dylan was dependent on the kindness and hospitality of several early admirers of his talent. Among the most supportive of these friends was the Mackenzie family: husband and wife Mac and Eve, and their son Peter, who was of a similar age to Dylan. The Mackenzies often played host to Dylan and his girlfriend Suze Rotolo during 1961 and 1962. They also made an unwitting contribution to folk music history by allowing Peter to tape several private performances by Bob Dylan, which have passed into legend as The Mackenzie Tapes.

The recording in this lot comprises what is known to Dylan collectors as The First Mackenzie Tape reliably documented as taking place on 23 November, 1961 (although some sources claim that the second half of the recording may have taken place on 4 December, 1961). The 23 November date is significant, not just because it was Thanksgiving (which may account for the general air of levity among many of the participants), but because it was the day after Dylan had completed work on recording his debut album. These sessions, for the record issued by Columbia in 1962 as Bob Dylan, had taken place on 20 and 22 November. Not surprisingly, Dylan reprised several of these performances on the First Mackenzie Tape, including Baby Let Me Follow You Down, House Of The Rising Sun, Highway 51 and You're No Good.

The first section of the tape begins in a convivial party atmosphere, with 15-20 people present among them Suze Rotolo. Dylan performs Baby Let Me Follow You Down, but breaks off abruptly when his friend and fellow folksinger Kevin Krown enters the room. He had met Krown the previous year in Denver, and the two young men had become close friends during 1961. Krown had taken it upon himself to act as Dylans unofficial manager and/or publicist during the second half of the year, and it is evident throughout the tape that Dylan regards Krown as a mentor. He certainly responds quickly whenever Krown requests particular material, and Krown also offers suggestions about Dylan's guitar technique. The recording also features additional guitar or mandolin accompaniment, while Dylan also performs a raucous harmonica instrumental. The session eventually becomes a mass singalong, as Dylan provides guitar accompaniment for folk standards such as This Land Is Your Land and Columbus Stockade Blues.

Dylan opens proceedings on the second section of the tape with a short but superb rendition of In My Time Of Dying, before Krown commandeers the microphone for several tunes, with Dylan supporting him on guitar, occasional vocals and even mandolin. Eventually one of the gathering perhaps Eve Mackenzie impatiently interrupts Krown and asks Dylan to sing. He answers her request with compelling versions of Highway 51 and This Land Is Your Land; during the latter, unfortunately, the reel runs out.

The dialogue scattered throughout this recording sheds fascinating light on this crucial period of Dylans life. There are clear references to his new recording deal with Columbia Records, his recent concert at the Carnegie Recital Hall (4 November 1961), and his friendship with the young blues singer John Hammond Jr (the son of his Columbia producer).

The First Mackenzie Tape is a vital document of Bob Dylan at the moment that his talent began to flower. It captures him on the verge of shifting identities from folk/blues interpreter to a songwriter in his own right. Only fragments of this recording are in circulation among collectors, with abysmal sound that does no justice to the excellent quality of these remarkable tapes.

October 2005

Rick Kangas is now ready to sell his 1959 Dylan tape. You only need to pay him 1.500.000 dollars! Here you can get more information about this bargain: RICK KANGAS DYLAN TAPE FOR SALE! (link found by Anders Sderberg)

DYLAN POEMS 1959-1960.
The Dylan lot dates from the music legend's brief 1959-60 stint at the University of Minnesota. The 16 pages of hand-written poems -- most signed "Dylan" or "Dylanism" -- document the earliest known usage of his pseudonym, having changed his name from Robert Zimmerman.
"While some of the poems are rooted in his daily university life and reference his Jewish heritage with Yiddish phrases, the wit and irony pervasive in his later songwriting are already evident in this body of work," said Christie's, which estimated the values of the lot at between 60,000 and 80,000 dollars.
A rare 1961 recording made by Dylan at a friend's house in New York was expected to bring as much as 60,000 dollars. The lots are being sold amid revived interest in Dylan memorabilia following publication of the singer's memoirs last year and the release last month of a critically acclaimed Dylan documentary directed by Martin Scorsese.

WINTERLUDE (TOP)

I founded WINTERLUDE, a Bob Dylan discussion group 30.8.2005! It's a Finnish FORUM, but I don't mind if you write English or Swedish. If you visited Winterlude on the first day I informed you about it on these pages, I advice you to go there again, because this site has changed radically during September!

There are now 52 registered members in Winterlude. They have written over 1900 messages. ADMIN TIEDOTTAA subject has got most visitors(over 1800 hits). Most people simultaneously online is now 12 and the record was made on 5th September 2005.

An important notice to all of you who use Winterlude. Sometime during Saturday (01.10.05) evening the main server (located in Italy) was updated, they changed hardware and it caused that the service was locked till Sunday morning. After Sunday noon the service was returned again, but for many hours only REGISTERED members could read and write messages. I don't know why this happened, but now it seems that things are back to normal and I really hope that there will be no more troubles.

Thanks for everyone who have visited SLOW TRAIN during the first days of February. I didn't understand you would be so many! This was only the second time the data flow limit has been exceeded during the six months this site has been active. I really hope some of you will revisit this site, because usually I update these pages almost every day.

18.2.06 klo 12: NYT Winterlude toimii taas!

Trke tiedote kaikille Winterluden kyttjille (17.2.06 klo 21.30)
Italialainen Forumup-firma on ryhtynyt siirtmn foorumiamme jlleen kerran uudelle serverille. Tst ei annettu minulle mitn ennakkovaroitusta. Nyt illalla hakuun ilmestyneess keskeytysilmoituksessa luvataan ,ett ty olisi valmis 4 tunnin kuluttua ja lisksi luvataan, ett uusi foorumi on parempi kuin vanha. Toivon todella ,ett siirtoty sujuu ilman ongelmia. Winterluden toimintakatkoksen ajan tiedotan asioiden etenemisest tll Slow Train kotisivullani, joten seuratkaa tt sivua pivittin. Toivon todella, ett Winterlude on kunnossa taas huomenna!

PLEASE notice! Today (1.3.06) at 15.30 Finnish time the Winterlude service was interrupted. If you try to enter the forum you only see this message:

"Fatal Error. Could Not Find Blog!
Searched for harrih.forumup.com/ in weblogupcom::wp_blogs table. Is that right?
Please check that your database contains the following tables: wp_blogs, wp_users, wp_usermeta, wp_site, wp_sitemeta, wp_sitecategories."

This has nothing to do with MY forum or YOUR PC, I think it is caused by italian server maintenance work, because other FORUMUP forums give the same message. You can still reach my forum and read the messages by using THIS backup web-address: http://209.85.35.82/index.php?mforum=harrih.
I'll let you know when the harrih address works again properly...

NOW (2.3.06) Winterlude seems to work again, but still when you write a new message and try to post it, there can be a painfully long delay. If you notice this, I recommend you to copy the mesaage before posting it, in that way you can easily repost in case the connection fails.

NEWS ABOUT THIS SITE (TOP)

In futute I will NOT update the CALENDAR page every day, but only when I do major changes. So, to keep track what's been done and when, please use the UPDATED PAGES section on front page. From there you can see, which pages have been updated recently.
All the old texts have been moved to the bottom of NEWS section page. Go there if you want to read them.

OLD NEWS ABOUT THE CHANGES I'VE MADE TO SLOW TRAIN PAGES

I've been busy changing everything here. Just have a look around. Now we have here YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE and RED pages! See also new photos of some Dylan items from my collection on the Books and Magazines pages!

I have recently created some new sub-sections to the front page. They are UPDATED PAGES and WHY SLOW TRAIN?. One can reach Updated Pages table very quickly by using the interlink above. The table helps one to orientate on which pages there are NEW text & information. I didn't include Calendar and Front Page, because on those you already see when they are updated.

I have now set a beta version of a NET MUSICIANS table 1988-2005 to NET STATS section. If you find any mistakes, please let me know. I have also written THREE new concert reviews: Helsinki 1989, Turku 1990 and Halle 1994 (I will add photos later). In addition I have recently written the first song and musicians introductions. You can read these in the SONGS and MUSICIANS sections.Hopefully you like these FIVE new texts.

Please notice that the Geocities data transfer problem that occured in August is corrected. The problem was caused by the layout picture that was in BMP file and took 213 kb. If many visitors logged in at the same time (as happened 13.8.) the data transfer limit was exceeded and the page was closed for an hour! I have changed this picture to JPG file that is only 6 kb! So, now it should allow even 60 visitors to check the page simultaneously!

HOW TO USE THESE PAGES? (TOP)

Surfing here is easy. Most of the first level sub-directories have a link to main page coded into the Slow Train title. So by clicking it you can easily get back to main page. The second level sections are not linked to main page, so you have to go to the bottom of the page and then click the HOME button to get back to main page.

The Calendar button leads you to my "technical" diary. You can see what's been done and when. There are now 14 main sub-directories and under them several second level sub-directories.

The first part of the main (front) page is Fresh Dylan News. After some days / weeks when these Fresh News are not so fresh anymore I'll transfer them to NEWS section, so that you will be able to find the texts and links from there.
The second part of this page is News About This Site and it gives you information about changes that I've made here recently. If I forget to update it, you can find the updated information from the CALENDAR section, which I so far have updated very conscientiously.

WHY SLOW TRAIN? (TOP)

The title of this site, Slow Train was the original name for a Finnish Dylan fan newsletter, that I wrote in 1999-2000. It was replaced by the Finnish private email group GOE (the Ghost Of Electricy), that has been active from february 1999, when I started this group. We have also had two international meetings during Dylan's concerts in Helsinki in 2000 and in 2003.

THANKS! (TOP)

Thanks to all those people who have visited these pages. Recently (10.10.05) most of them - about 300 in fact! - have come here from US and UK through KARL-ERIK's fantastic expectingrain.com site. Usually I have here my fellow countrymen from GOE(Finland) ja WINTERLUDE(Finland) and from the LoveAndTheft.se (Sweden). We have had some German visitors too. They come from Bobdylan.de, which is a German Dylan site. SPECIAL thanks goes to my friend Jim Bishop (UK), who has kindly proof-read some of my texts. And all you out there, if you find any errors concerning language or facts, please let me know (you can e-mail me directly: [email protected]). Please, visit this site every now and then. I'm sure you won't be disappointed, because I write new texts here almost every day. Don't read this if you don't want to know anything about me (eh?)...

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DYLAN BUT IS SO RARE AND UNUSUAL THAT I HAVE TO TELL IT HERE ANYWAY. FOR 50 YEARS FINLAND HAS BEEN "THE ZERO" COUNTRY IN EUROVISION SONG CONTEST, BUT FINALLY IN 2006 FINLAND WON!
