After the disastrous Helsinki 1987 concert Dylan's fame had radically ebbed in Finland. For many Finns he wasn't the legendary star anymore. So, when in the Spring of 1989 the Finnish promoter began advertising Bob's 1989 concert in J��halli the ticket selling was very SLOW indeed. Rarely have I seen so many advertisements for only one concert. The result was very modest, because only 3000 or 4000 tickets were sold. In 1987 J��halli was practically sold out, meaning that about 10 000 people came to see Bob then. But... "Times They WERE A-Changin"... people remembered only what the papers wrote after the 1987 concert and so in 1989 only very young people or loyal fans came to see him.
Fools, I say! 1989 concert was really rocking, a wonderful mixture of greatest hits and extremely rare songs. My dream concert. Bob played two mega-rare songs: CONFIDENTIAL and EILEEN AARON. Those performances alone made it worthwhile to come back to J��halli. But that was only beginning. Bob was a changed man! So full of energy and real passion to perform. I was amazed, was this really the same man? And what a band! They really rocked. G.E. Smiths solos were sublime. Kenny Aaronson played bass like a real pirate, if you know what I mean :) And Parker was also very good.
After some years I thought: uh, my memory deceives me, it wasn't that good, I'm only imagining and making it larger than life, something that it wasn't...But then somebody showed me the video of this show and... YES...even that hazy, metallic sounding VHS tape gave me the evidence I had so badly longed for: it was good, really good and that made me happy. My second Dylan concert should have been the first one, but what can you do? Life isn't predictable. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. That's the name of the game.
