Dokic Admits Mistake 281100

Controversial tennis father Damir Dokic yesterday declared he had turned over a new leaf and promised he would not be involved in any more scuffles and disagreements over his talented daughter Jelena. Dokic also said Jelena would continue to play for Australia despite recently obtaining a Yugoslav passport and planning to live in Yugoslavia and Florida to cut down on travel. He said he was happy with everything he had done during Jelena's career but admitted to one mistake - dumping coach Tony Roche. A relaxed Dokic said while he was happy with his actions in the past, he was going to change his ways. "For future, is new image and stop with everything, with fight. A new man," he told Nine Network's A Current Affair. "I think that everything that i do is good for Jelena but fighting with media, with WTA, everything is good until now. But now is enough." He denied that his daughter was frightened at him. "She is not scared. Everything what i do about Jelena, about tennis is very good for Jelena, but now everything must be stopped." Dokic has been tagged a tennis dad from hell after his antics. He is banned from the Women's Tennis Association tour until March next year after exhibiting bizzare and drunken behaviour at three of the four majors in the last two years. Dokic said he did not agree with his punishment but would continue to be Jelena's coach and manager after the ban was lifted. He said he wanted to protect his daughter, who came to prominence when she thrashed world No 1 Martina Hingis in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon in 1999. "Tennis is not sport, it is big business, sometime can be big money," he said. "Tennis is one jungle, if you are not careful you can be dead very quickly." Dokic said sacking successful Davis Cup coach Tony Roche was his only mistake when managing Jelena. "I make just one mistake, it is when we stopped practising with Mr Tony Roche," he said. "I think he's the best coach in the world but after Jelena lost one match 6-0 6-0 he's told her 'dont worry. bad luck'. "After that i was very very angry." Dokic then made a strange analysis of Tony Roche. "I think Mr Tony Roche can't be an Aussie man. He has big, big heart. He is a good man," he said. When asked if Australians didn't have big hearts, Dokic replied: "Not Like Mr Tony." news.com.au

Dokic: I won't abandon Dad 020900 by JOHN THIRSK

JELENA DOKIC says she will stand by her father through "thick and thin" despite his erratic behaviour. The 17-year-old prodigy said she did not know what triggered his behaviour, but she was learning to deal with it. In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Telegraph from New York, where she is through to the third round of the US Open, Dokic revealed she holds no fears for her tennis future. "I'm dealing with this one okay, not too badly don't you think?" she said. "I had the match under control from the beginning. "I just wanted to play as well as I could and, hopefully, I can get into a another grand slam semi-final like I did at Wimbledon." Dokic said she took the attitude that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. "It seems the bigger the off-court drama (with my Dad), the better I play," she said with a laugh. "Everyone is finding that a bit hard to believe. "Maybe I should have a bit of drama before every match. I'm not worried about what happened with my father at all." If Dokic was embarrassed or emotional, then she was hiding it, unlike images of her during her father's latest ejection. There, she was photographed and filmed by television cameras tearfully watching the drama unfold as her father defiantly remonstrated with Flushing Meadow security. "I'm just letting it all go by," she told me. "I'm getting on with my life and with my tennis. "I've got to do that and not let the off-court drama distract me from my game." She added: "Whatever happens to my father, I will always stand by him through thick and thin. "I still don't think what he did at the restaurant at Flushing Meadow was terribly wrong at all." It is the third time Damir Dokic's irrational behaviour at a grand slam tournament has caused unwanted publicity for his daughter. Last week's ejection came after Dokic abused staff in the players' restaurant over the size of a seafood meal. But an incident at Wimbledon this year put him on notice that he could be banned from Women's Tennis Federation events, just like Jim Pierce, the father of two-time grand slam champion Mary Pierce. Dokic snr said on Friday that alcohol played a part in his behaviour, but his daughter says she does not know what triggers it. "It's something that happened again and I have to live with it. "I have to try and not let it get me down. He's not too down about it," Jelena said. "We went out for a seafood dinner after I won my second match. Everyone in the restaurant knew who we were. "It was fun and everyone was polite to us." Dokic said she and her father were not discussing his future role and she had not spoken to tennis officials. "I'm taking each day as it comes," she said.

Pierce offers Dokic support 010900

DUAL grand slam winner Mary Pierce, the woman with the previous most notorious tennis dad on the women's tour, has offered to help Australia's troubled teen Jelena Dokic. Pierce led a chorus of sympathy among leading players for Dokic, a day after the 17-year-old's father and coach, Damir, was barred from the US Open. And Pierce should know who it feels, having seen her father Jim banned from the tour for abusive behaviour in 1993, and only allowed back with tight restrictions five years later. "If Jelena wants some advice she can ask me," Pierce, 25, said, adding it was hard to judge such father-daughter relationships from the outside. "Everybody's situation is different. I don't know exactly what's going on or what's happening (with Dokic)." Dutchwoman Miriam Oremans, who witnessed just how well Dokic could ignore her distractions by losing 6-1 6-4 to her today, said she could only admire the Sydney teenager. "I feel sorry for her. It's difficult for her," Oremans said. "But the way she plays on the court, with such mental toughness. For a 17-year-old girl, that's tough. I have to say: 'Good job'." While matches involving Dokic at this tournament will now carry heavy attention, Oremans said playing the Australian did not prove an extra distraction. "It wasn't playing on my mind, but all the attention was on her," she said. "You know that's going to happen. I knew it before I went on court. I told myself not to focus on that but to focus on my own game. I think she played well." Oremans was expecting Dokic to be at her best, having seen her carry on when her father was ejected on the first of three occasions, at Birmingham last year. "I saw her the day afterwards playing a match. She was the same, she was focused and she had her mind on the game and not off the game," she said. Dokic said she had appreciated the words of her fellow pros during the current drama. "A lot of players have supported me," she said. "I think it just shows how much players sort of care for each other."
