Dokic Has A Change Of Heart 230200

Dokic had earlier said she would almost certainly boycott the Olympics as a form of "revenge" for a newspaper article for which she disputed. "I'm obviously upset with the Melbourne Herald Sun but i shouldn't have directed this frustration at the Olympic Games," Dokic said in a statement issued by Tennis Australia (TA). "It's got nothing to do with the Olympics, nor Australia." Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard confirmed TA officials had been involved with talks with 16-year-old Dokic to change her mind. Pollard also revealed that TA was supporting Dokic in her bid to secure a copy of her taped interview with the newspaper. The Sun Herald quoted Dokic as claiming last month that her tournament draws had been rigged to slow her career, earning her the ire of women's tour officials. Dokic has vehemently denied making the claim. She is on her way to Mexico where she will play Steffi Graf in an exhibition match before heading to Davis Cup captain John Newcombe's Texas training ranch for a training camp to prepare her next WTA tour event, the Champions Cup at Indian Wells. Her management company Octagon said the world No46 was keen to move forward after a controversial summer in which she'd also been widley criticised for dismissing her Australian Opem conqueror Rita Kuti-Kis as someone who "isn't a player". All Lies Says Dokic 210100

Jelena Dokic yesterday denied she had claimed tennis officials had rigged tournament draws. Dokic said she had tried to obtain the tape of her interview with the Melbourne Herald Sun which she said would show the newspaper's story was an inaccurate portrayal of her comments. "What hewrote ... we had a totally different conversation. He wrote a totally different story the next day," Dokic said. "I asked for the tape because i didn't say what he wrote," she told a packed media confernce yesterday after her Open doubles win with Jennifer Capriati. Dokic said everything in the article had been false. The editor of the Herald Sun, Peter Blunden, said the paper stood by its story and would not release a copy of the tape recording. "We don't release transcripts of tapes. We don't feel obligated to release anything," Blunden said. The Daily Telegraph, Friday January 21 2000

Dokic back in spotlight 200100

TROUBLED tennis teenager Jelena Dokic will be back in the spotlight at the Australian Open later today when she takes to the court with another former troubled prodigy in American Jennifer Capriati in a first round doubles match. Dokic's outburst yesterday was the talk of the tournament after she claimed some tournament draws were manipulated against her while her father later clashed with a television cameraman. It capped off a bad couple of days for Australia's 16-year-old top ranked female player, who crashed out in the first round to little known Hungarian player Rita Kuti Kis and then later slammed her as "a player nobody has ever heard of and probably never will." Dokic's doubles match with Capriati is the last match up on show court three today and is expected to draw not only a huge crowd but also a massive media contiginent on what is an otherwise quiet day with most of the top men's and women's singles seeds not playing. Capriati, who reached the third round in the singles last night after a hard fought three set win over 14th seed Dominique Van Roost, said she will use today's doubles match to offer some friendly advice to her younger compatriot. The 23-year-old American is certainly well qualified having fought back from a series of personal problems, which kept her out of tennis in both 1994 and 1995. "I'm playing doubles with her and that would be a good opportunity (to have a talk with her)," Capriati said after her victory last night. While Capriati was reluctant to discuss Dokic's situation last night she did go into bat for the embattled Aussie teenager. "Who really knows what the influences around her are," Capriati said. "You don't know if it's coming directly from her." "I think a lot of things are blown out of proportion and nobody is perfect and the way this business is, when you're in the public eye, every word you say sometimes is taken overboard.' My advice to Dokic 200100

WORLD No1 Martina Hingis has warned outspoken teenager Jelena Dokic to bite her tongue and use her fighting spirit on court. Tennis Australia boss Geoff Pollard also has pledged to help the Sydney 16-year-old who has become immersed in ongoing contoversy at the Australian Open. Hingis, yesterday offered the voice of hard-won experience experience to the teen who belittled her opponent and critisized the sports officials after she crashed out of the tournament on Monday. "You shouldn't do that," said Hingis. "Jelena is still young and she has to learn ... I made so many mistakes myself in saying things which I shouldnt have said. "I hope Jelena does not make the same mistakes. She might be disappointed, but she has obviously got her own mind and soul and can speak up. "She's a fighter and a competitor. It might hurt her that she lost first round. But she has to move on." Story By Paul Malone, The Daily Telegraph Wednesday January 20 2000

Jelena Foot-Faulted Again 200100

TEENAGER tennis star Jelena Dokic's stormy career hitrough weather again yesterday when her father clashed with a television cameraman in Melbourne. Damir Dokic lunged at a Channel 7 cameraman as he and Jelena were being filmed walking near a city car park. He then offered cameraman Adrian Bray $500 for a return of Bray's camera minus the film. Mr Dokic had walked for 500m with the camera while unsuccessfully trying to remove the tape. He could be seen on Channel 7 footage offering cash in return for the video tape. Soon after the confrontation, a furious Jelena called The Daily Telegraph to deny telling the newspaper she believed tennis officials arranged tournament draws to stymie her career. She offered $50,000 for the tape of the interview. "It's all lies," she said. "You only printed 1 per cent of what i said." Dokic's coach Tony Roche said yesterday: "She's got to get back on court to do what she does best." The Daily Telegraph Wednesday January 20 2000

World Against Me-Dokic's conspiracy theory 180100

Young tennis star Jelena Dokic believes the draws for her matches are being deliberately changed to stall her career. Dokic made the bizarre claim yesterday, alleging tennis officials were working agaisnt her after her father was arrested at a tournament last year. She told The Daily Telegraph that a run of bad draws since Wimbledon last year had left her convinced something was going wrong. This is despite each draw being monitored and supervised.Sydney's Dokic, 16, with her father Damir at her side, claimed she was undermined around the world-but not in Australia. "For all this trouble, it's a bit hard to believe getting draws like that," Dokic said. "They say they pull them out [of a hat] but i dn't think so." Dokic and her father launched Attacks on the Women's Tennis Association yesterday after she was fined $3500 for appearing late at a press conference on Monday. This followed her first round loss to rank outsider, Hangarian Rita Kuti Kis, sparking Dokic ungraciously t play down her oponent's skills and future. In yesterday's interview at her Melbourne hotel, Dokic refused to back down from her attack on the hungarian. Asked if she regretted her comments, Dokic said: "No, i don't think so. "I just basically said if you look at where she is and her age, you will see you have never heard of her and probably never will," she said. "She beat me but i still had a lot of bad luck and lost." Mr Dokic said the family had no friends on tour except for his daughter's coach, Tony Roche. He also played down his relationship with Dokic's management company. With Mr Dkic prompting her, Dokic said much f the family's motivation came from the fact that they had been refugees from Serbia befre coming to Australia in 1994. "He[my father] says i have a lot of pressure on me because of where we come from," she said. "I cam to be number one junior in the world and ranked number 37 in the world when we had nothing _ only social security. "And there's a lot of pressure on me from the WTA since after Birmingham-they gave the wrong information to the police who arrested my dad. Mr. Dokic accused the WTA of acting out of order in Birmingham and after Dokic appeared three hours' late for Monday's press conference. Mr Dokic, 40, was arrested in birmingham last year after officials said he barracked to loudly at the DFS Classic. WTA spokesman Jim Fushe said there was no way the draw could be manipulated. He said a player was chosen at each tournament to draw the names under the supervision of the tournament director and it was a random process carefully watched. BE A GOOD LOSER-Dokic told after outburst 180100

SYDNEY teenager Jelena Dokic needed to learn how to lose with grace after her attack on an opponent in the Australian Open last night, a leading women tennis star said today. Dokic's ungracious outburst came after and extraordinary string of events which included Dokic heading to church immediatley after her error-ridden first round loss to little-known Hungarian Rita Kuti Kis. The 16-year-old went missing for more that four hours-and risked a $10,000 fine from tour officials for dodging her mandatory press conference - before being located.Tennis Commentator and former star player Pam Shriver said today:"I think it is pretty easy when you are young after a disappointing loss, even if its several hours later, to maybe say some things that don't come off as to gracious. "It's very impressionable, very vunerable age when you're a teenager and you're battling the pressures f public life." Shriver said Dokic had been unfairly built up after her run at Wimbledon last year during which she beat an under-strength Martina Hingis. "She's clearly feeling a bit of heat right now given her success at Wimbledon last year,"Shriver said. "Space is a better thing." Dokic said she went to pray after the match. "I prayed to play a little bit better than i did [yesterday]," Dokic said. Dokic who lost 1-6 6-2 3-6, began her delayed her press conference by contemptuously dismissing lower-ranked Kuti Kis and bemoaning an inability t transfer her practice frm into tournament matches. She read a statement in which she said "Basically i lost to a player today that has never been a player and i guess probably never will be. "She played well against me today but people have never known her and she beat me ... if anyone saw my practice, there is probably not even three or four players at the moment who can beat me if i play like that in the match. "It's just that iv'e been having trouble putting it into my matches. It will probably take time to do it, a couple of months, six months maybe, but once it gets going it will always be like i did at Wimbledon. "It will be tough to beat me like in the juniors-in seven months i got to be No.1 in the world in juniors. Like i said, I've just gt to get it together in my matches and once i do that i think i'll get up there pretty quick.
