DOKICPAGE dedicated to Jelena

Biography 1999

Jelena Dokic was born on the 12th of April 1983 in Osijek, Croatia. The Dokic family is made up of Jelena, Savo her 9 year old brother Damir her father and Ljiliana her mom. Due to the war, Jelena and her family moved to Belgrade, Serbia and in 1994 they migrated to Fairfield, a suburb in Sydney, Australia. They lived in a small apartment until moving out recently into a new villa across the street after her success at Wimbledon. She attended Fairfield High School and later dropped out.

At the age of six, her father, Damir bought Jelena her first ever tennis raquet and a year later she was already beating him. She had great success playing in the WTA juniors competition winning several tournaments including the US open. She was also the world number one junior.

In early 1999 Jelena burst into the Australian spotlight winning the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia with fellow Australian, Mark Philippousis. She demolished several players in that tournament including then world number four, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. She continued her success in the Australian Open, making the 3rd round only to lose to Martina Hingis.

The next few months were fairly quiet and even the French Tournament didn't bring much success, with Jelena losing in the first round. Then came the month of June. Jelena and her family arrived at Wimbledon. Jelena's task was massive because she had a tough draw including world number one Martina Hingis in the first round. She ended up thrashing Hingis in straight sets, 6-2 6-0. Many Australians woke up the next morning in shock and Jelena Dokic became a household name around the world. Jelena's success brought her to the Quarter Finals where she lost to a more focused Alexandra Stevenson. The match was disrupted many times and the scoreline in the end was defenitely affected.

After Jelena's success at Wimbledon she is now an idol for many fans from around the world. However, after Wimbledon Jelena hasn't risen back to her best yet, losing in the first few rounds of tournaments she played in during August and September. Jelena was beaten in the first round of the US Open. The Fed Cup, where she helped the Australian girls get into the World Group is probably the best result she has had since Wimbledon.

Hopefully, I will be able to write many more success stories in this biography of this rising tennis sensation as she grows up and develops into a true champion. Go Jelena! You Can Do It!
