Sauron was the creator of the Ring of Power, and at the time of the Fellowship was in constant search for the ring. His most loyal servants were the 9 Nazgul or Ringwraiths, and he planned and carried out too many deeds to be listed here. Even though he didn't have the Ring of Power, the existance of the ring gave him enough strength to live and when it was destroyed he was also destroyed forever.
