Born in 2438 Gollum was originally a member of the Stoors tribe, creatures resembling Hobbits. While fishing one day with his cousin Deagol, Deagol spotted a glittering object (the Ring of Power) in the water and picked it up. Gollum was immediately taken with greed and was determined to have it so he murdured his cousin and took the ring. He was banished from his family and retreated to a cave in the Misty Mountains until Bilbo found the ring in his cave. After that he travelled around trying to find the ring again until he was captured by Sauron and tortured until he told him who had the ring. Afterwards he was captured by Aragorn and imprisoned by Gandalf, but then escaped again and followed the Fellowship finally catching up to them in Moria. Gollum was captured by Frodo and Sam in Emyn Muil and led them to Cirith Ungol and then betrayed them to Shelob. After Frodo and Sam escaped Shelob he followed them to Mount Doom, where after Frodo became completely consumed by the ring he bit off Frodo's finger in an attempt to steal the ring and ended up falling into the fire with the Ring of Power.
