Gandalf, or Gandalf the Grey/White, entered Middle-Earth as one of the Istari. Gandalf was the bearer of the third Elven Ring, Narya or the Ring of Fire given to him by Cirdan. Gandalf had always been a friend of Hobbits, especially Bilbo and Frodo, and it was he who figured out that Bilbo's ring was the long-lost Ring of Power. He aided Frodo on his journey as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, and even though he fell battling the Balrog in Moria, he returned as Gandalf the White. He was largely responsible for the defeat of Sauron, for example taking over Saruman's position of Head of the White Council andfreeing King Theodin from Grima and Saruman's control. After the War of the Ring he sailed across the sea with Elrond, Galadriel, Bilbo and Frodo.
