During the 1930's, almost 1/3 of the pecipes for salads in the average cookbook were for gelatin or Jell-O salads.

The salad has been around sinse ancient times, named for the Latin word for salt (
sal ) with which the greens were seasoned.

The American salad in the first half of the 20th century usually meant iceberg lettuce and, when summer vegetables were not available, often included included fruits such as apples, raisens, and oranges.

During the Depression, when sugar was dear, ginger ale was a practical substitute in gelatin-based salads.

The Caesar salad was first made in 1924 by Caesar Cardini and his brother Alex in their Italian restaurant in Mexico. At first it was called Aviator's Salad, but later Cardini named the dish after himself.
